Getting visa to work in Tanzania

Hi, Im considering moving from UK and try to settle in Tanzania.  I understand that a visa will only allow entry for up to 2 months, at which point you have to leave Tanzania and then re enter.  Can this be done easily by paperwork, or do you have to physically leave and re enter?  Would a trip to Zanzibar, and back be considered as leaving and re entering?  I am considering going to Dar es Salaam and trying to find work locally within a 2 month stay, and then find a way of becoming resident.  Is any of this possible, or just a pipe dream.  Any help greatfully appreciated.

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul, welcome on Expat-blog! :)

Hi, Paul

My husband and I (German and American, respectively) own a restaurant/bar amongst other businesses. Your VISA cost at KIA or Dar es Salaam airport depends on your country of origin. For the Americans, it was $50 and then went up to $100, and now down again. You can look that up easily on the internet.

The VISA expiration date is usually 2 months after you enter the first time. Going to Zanzibar is not considered leaving the country. Your best bet is to go to Nairobi. You have 2 choices for your VISA. 1. get a 2-month tourist VISA at $50-100, but you are NOT AT ALL allowed to work legally. People do it and then get escorted out of the country on the very same day. 2. Get a work agreement with a company (official letter etc) BEFORE you come in and then pay $120 to get a Class C residence permit. Then you are attached to that company and you can work as an apprentice/intern/building-skills person at no cost to the company, other than your wages. That VISA is valid for 1 year.

We have an opportunity for you, but it would require your independence. We have two tented campsites on Kilimanjaro for rent, at $1000/month each. That means you could potentially pay your $120/yr VISA plus $1000/mo for one campsite or $2000/mo for both. Our campsites include 3 exclusive large-scale walk-in tents, which include a bathroom with shower (w/heater), double-sized or twin beds, desks, mess tent, kitchen area. As its camp manager, you get your own tent as well. One of our campsites is located on Lerangwa, near the Lemosho Route. There are a couple of other campsites there, which charge about $200 per person per night. At ours, you face Kibo and then turn 180 degrees and you see the plains of Kenya. There is also an elephant conservation site about a 15-minute drive from the camp, and there is a watering hole frequented by wild animals like gerenook, elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, and other gazelles. This campsite is a 2-hour drive to Moshi or to Arusha (ie, civilization).

Our other campsite is near the Machame route. There is currently no campsite on that route, so you could potentially be full every night. It is near Moshi, about 40 minutes drive. It is located in the lush green rainforest. The weather is amazing there year-round.

Hope this helps

Hi, thanks for your posting, I'm very grateful for your information and I must say it looks tempting, I'll run the idea past the wife and see what she has to say.  Are you suggesting that we would rent the campsite/s from yourselves, promote them for clients, and have a profitable business?  Can you tell me how long the LOW season would be, and what extra equipment we might need to supply to keep the customers happy?  It might be just the start we need to make Tanzania our home and I will be giving it some serious consideration.

Any further information you can give me might just be the thing I need to persuade the Mrs that this is the sort of thing to go for.

Many thanks

Paul (Nottingham UK)
