Moving to Malta

Hi everyone,
I'm so glad I found this site! I have learned so much from what I have read!!

My husband and I visited Malta about 12months ago and we fell in love with the place, the way of life etc. We have since debated whether or not to make the move and now we know we do without a doubt.

We aren't strangers to moving away as we lived in Ireland for 3 years and we loved it.

The only thing niggling me at the moment is the industry my husband works in. We noticed all houses, apartments and flats are all flat roofed. Well, my husband is a flat roofer, it's all he knows, he been doing it for over 20 years.
Does anybody know at all whether or not there is a need for an extra roofer?? I'm just a bit worried that there could be no work for him whatsoever as I'm assuming with nearly almost every building having a flat roof then surely Malta must be over run with roofers??? He is Self Employed at the moment and makes a lot of money, however, we both know he wouldn't be earning what he does in England but that doesn't worry us. He just needs to work and earn enough to live. We prefer a more relaxing life with nice weather than lots of money.
Any help / advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks everyone
Lisa

hi - roofs here are made of concrete, , normally large slabs - what material does your husband use ?

hi Lisa!

Welcome to expat-blog! :D

Hopefully other members could give you more specific advice about this but you could try posting an ad in the Malta Classifieds >Jobs and hence, judge the type of demand for this type of work.

Best of luck with everything Lisa.

Best regards,
Haf

Hi Lisa,

Welcome to the forum.

As George said the roofs here are generally made of concrete blocks covered and sealed with a waterproof membrane.

It is a typical job for the local Maltese roof sealer or handyman. My guess is that your husband would be competing wage wise with the average Maltese salary , somewhere between miniumum wage and average salary of around 1000-1200 €/month.He could work as self-employed but without a large network and without speaking Maltese that could turn out to be difficult.

The building industry in Malta has been going strong but it is now cooling down a lot due to a high level of unused and unsold buildings and apartments so there is an increasing number of unemployed construction workers and struggling companies.

Obviously your husband has a lot of experience in the trade but maybe not with the Maltese way of doing things.

He should try applying to one of the bigger Maltese building companies for a job before making the final step or come for a visit and just go around talking to companies on site or send his CV to one of the many job agencies.

I wish you luck.
Ricky

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice.

My husband specialises in waterproofing membranes, felt, liquid applications etc.

He has recently applied for some jobs with some waterproofing contractors so fingers crossed .

Hi Lisa,

I wish him luck.

Please keep us updated on terms and conditions that are offered. It will be a great help for other expats in a similar situation.

Regards
Ricky

Are you normally a glass half empty person ? I'd be more worried about lack of work if there were no flat roofs at all.

Hi Ricky

Thanks, I will keep posted how he gets on etc.

George - It's because of the flat roofs that Malta appealed to us. Well one of the reasons anyway. Obviously, we aren't going to relocate somewhere where all the roofs are slating and tiling as he doesn't do that. I understand where you're coming from though.

Lisa

waterproofing membranes?????

sounds sexy.

sorry I have nothing useful here, but thought that was funny.....
