When you are in Ukraine your friends will find you easy 
if you are alone specially in a pub and you are communicative and open minded
don't be affaid to speak with men and women as Ukrainians are very friendly people and they may help you any kind of situation

Hey, I have a good idea for any one who wants to make friends among locals - recently there appeared many English speaking clubs, where local people gather to improve their English. Native speakers are always welcome there, so you will make some friends and get more familiar with local culture.
If you're looking for other expats, I think it's reasonable to use Internet to find some of them.
