Any savvy netizen should check out current prices of a wide range of products in Taiwan by browsing sites as Yahoo Auction in Taiwan as well as other shopping sites.
Medical services for locals insured under the national plan cost differently than for someone under another plan. A routine dental cleaning or filling costs only about US$5 for the registration, but may be as much as US$260 for a crown.
A typical outpatient visit at a hospital including meds could cost US$20, but as much as US$4,200 for minimally invasive endoscopic spinal surgery.
A cheap meal can be had for less than US$4 at a semi-self-serve diner, while a teppanyaki steak at an upscale restaurant can cost US$320.
The rule of thumb is to comparison shop in Taiwan simply because product distribution on the island is haphazard with the grey market often competing against authorized suppliers to result in wide ranging prices sometimes for the same item. And never take for granted a Taiwanese retailer's integrity and honesty.
The universal rule of business applies: prices vary directly with a shop's overhead cost.
