Speaking French in Reunion Island

Hi everyone,

It is widely agreed that speaking French is essential for a successful integration in Reunion Island. Do you agree? Share your experience!

Do you speak French? If so, where did you learn this language? Where can one attend a language course in Reunion Island?

If not, how do you cope with daily activities? Is it easy to communicate in a different language with Reunioneses?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

I would say it is a must in most countries to speak the official language!!! And I would find it most surprising that anybody could think otherwise!
Although there is a little  particularity in Reunion Island (and some other islands which were under English or French protectorate) which is Creole language which is so widely spread that if you really want to feel "integrated", that's the one you should aim at learning....And don't try to use Creole from another Caribbean or Indian ocean island. Each Creole has its own words and specificities and they are not interchangeable.
