I had an experience the other day...while I was walking from buying broasted chicken a few blocks from my flat, this local, having an old car and with a kid on the passenger seat, called my attention. I was hesitant and started to continue walking, then he said he was going to ask me something. Then he said the formal greeting in muslim, after that he is telling me insignificant things like how he liked my race, ect. Then I said to my self, what the f*#$ is he talking about. Then I told him I am in a hurry what do you want? Then the real intention came out...He's asking me money for gas...then I told myself...WTF!!!!, then I told this guy immediately that I don't have any money, I am poor..(ha ha ha holding a  broasted in one hand and shawarma in the other doesn't make this convincing). Then he insisted and told me that he's Muttawa. I just told him politely that I will not give him even 1 Riyal...then he was angry and sped away from me.

What a waste of time...I asked around about this, and apparently this has been going on for a long time now...I hope this info will make us aware and not give in to this kind of actions from some individuals.

Cheers.

Well acknowledging the ills of society is a good start and which society does not have such gangsters.
It happened to me 1 year ago and this mutawa type person in the company of his kids looked genuine as he told me that he is from abha and came to riyadh and lost his wallet and needed money for the gas, bla bla, anyway I gave him 50 sar. He thanked me and prayed for me and my family.
The funny situation happened when around 3 months ago, I was waiting in my car parked outside a shop and this GMC stopped right next to me and this fella exactly the same (my memory is really good with faces :-)) told me the same story, I told him "well, how much do you need? he said enough to fill the tank, I said will 200 riyal be enough to fill your tank?he looked surprised and then I told him how we met last year and that  I thought to give him money so that he won't bother me for next 4 years, he laughed and ran away."

Cheers

Very nice work there oracle, the funny thing about your experience was you want to pay him in advance so that he won't bother you anymore....cheers mate.

Weel, this looks like standard procedure for begging in KSA.

All the time its a saudi guy in a crown-vic / suburban  and once even in a camry & a lumina, with a wife and kids in the car, telling me that they came to see so-n-so in dammam/hofuf and now either their car needs repair or they need gas and they don't have money for it (well, WTF did you come all this way if you had no money for gas ?) and i ended up giving them 50-70SAR every time. I've fallen prey to this scam atleast 4 times, and believe it or not, once in Bahrain, by a saudi who got money out of me after seeing my saudi plates !!!

Once i spoke to my saudi colleague about this and he told me that its just a novel way of begging and not to fall into the trap again.

Well the problem is because of tall this, there re several genuine cases who dont get the attention..
It is sad but then thats how life is...

This has become a common tactic played by saudis. I had seen many such incedents, once a guy in a brand new honda started asking for money for gas. I suggested that i shall buy his car from him and he can go back to wherever he came from and buy a car from there, he actually sped off :D i'v been here long enough as not to fall to such traps.
