I have a buddy looking to relocate from the US to Germany and was asking me about how to find an apartment or a shared flat without any prior rental history or having history with SCHUFA. Does anyone have any advice on how to get around this?

Thanks in advance. ;)

you dont necesarily have to get Schufa.  If you have registered yourself, have a valid visa and have a bank account . ( also work contract in some cases)   one can search for home through immobilienscout or wg gesucht .

Every landlord has his/her own method of judging the financial situation of a prospective tenant (i.e. whether he/she will be able to pay the rent). Many, but by far not all, want to see a "Schufa Selbstauskunft" (excerpt from Schufa).
In any case, your friend can get a Schufa excerpt with "no entries", since he had no chance to generate any yet: Only negative items are recorded in Schufa!
And I agree with the previous poster: A residence permit and work contract (hopefully well paid) are much more important for getting a rental flat!
