Specialty Physicians

Hello,  I am wondering how difficult it is to find medical specialists in Puerto Rico?  If I moved there, I would likely have to plan at least a yearly visit stateside for medical visits.  But it may be that I would need a neurologist while I was there as well.  Anyone familiar with neurologists on the island?  Specialty pharmacies for meds that are not generic or mainstream?  So many Millions of things to consider!!!

Don't know about neurologists.   Your Dr in the US should be able to refer you to the appropriate neurologist in PR (if one exists )  .  After you locate the Dr. send or take him/her a copy of your medical record, call and schedule an appointment.  Pharmacies like CVS and Walmart should be able to get any med needed, call if in doubt.

Some specialist care can be had in PR, just a little more difficult.  My Doctor in CT was able to refer me to a Yale trained retinal specialist in PR and she is excellent, with offices in SJ and Hatillo.

I would follow Sitka advice, many specialist have left and continue to leave the island due to payment issues with Medicare and Medicaid (MySalud), also with what the hospital pays them.

The goverment is trying to get some doctors and hospitals lined up for a tourist medical program to attract people from other countries to have their procedures done in PR, so some specialists and surgeons are staying. But the number of procedures is still small if growing.

Anybody with serious medical issues that are likely to mean emergency intervention should stay away from the island, one can not always wait to take a plane in an emergency.

If your health is fairly good, PR is fine, just fly to mainland from time to time.

Medical treatment in the island is cheaper to the tune of 40 to 60%, but a lot of times you have multiple months of wait to see a specialists. The quality of their training is the same since most of the island doctors and surgeons study in the mainland.

Some doctors are cash only, they will not accept most medical plans because the payment back is low compared to the states.

A lot of medical facilities in the US are aggressively recruiting in PR for doctors, surgeons and nurses, offering them 2 to 3 times the pay they get in PR. This does not help the island keep specialists.

Not being negative, just making sure you have your eyes open, and let you make the right decision for yourself.

While the island have orthopedic surgeons, we decided to postpone moving to the island until my wife knees could be replaced in the states, Boston have some of the best orthopedic doctors there are in the Mainland. Once she is all set up we will put our house on the market and when the house is under contract, I will return to rent a place and move when the house is fully sold, then I will start building my house in PR.

You have more doctor choices in the US and some specialist that do not exist in the island, that is why we are delaying.

If you been postponing medical treatment get it done in the US and then head to the island. That is my advice.
