Is there extra duty on importing a 50" tv, included within a container of household goods.

Assuming you are importing it under the "menaje de casa" and meet all of the requirements, the general rule is you can bring a tv in the household container without having to pay taxes.

Generally speaking, the rule regarding the tax exemption for household items is they have to in proportion to the size of the family. For a couple, you shouldn't have a problem with a 50" TV and say a smaller 32" for a bedroom.

I say "general rule" because rules (and application of them) can be open to interpretation at the discretion of the customs officials

Thanks for the information. I had horrible thoughts a serious tax would be applied. Subject of course to your last paragraph.
