I have plan visit chennai in april 2011, but still blind about the destination and the direction there ( bus, train and hotel).
My list is around chennai city, visit the temple and interesting place, than continued to mahabalipuram mybe pondhicery also. Not sure for distance and time, because i just have 3 day before continued to bangalore.
Anyone can help?
where is it chennai??????
maybe i can give you contacts of my colleagues or friends who have houses in chennai but will ask them first
i can give you what ever details u require
Airline code for Chennai is MAA and the airport area is called meenampakam. there are buses auto rickshaw and taxi available from outside the airport to take you where ever you want.
Taxi fare from airport to city is around 300 to 400 indian rupees and auto rickshaw is half the fare like say 100 to 200 rupees to city.
hope this info is useful to you. Also if you need to find out famous temples go to google and search for cheenai india tourist or places to see.. good luck
Chennai is in India and is close to cities like kerala and bangalore.
within the city there is nothing much to see . You can plan your trip immediately to mahabalipuram (it is a small hamlet ) .you will like the sea shore .Incase you want to taste south indian food then chennai is the best . within chennai you can also visit a couple of temples like parthasarathy temple .
Yes, i will try to stay @ triplicane area while im in chennai, that much temple around there, and also saint thomas basilika. Than next day i will go to mahabalipuram, can you tell me if just a day in mahabalipuram its enough time?.
Im still confused, about budget hotel and transport, im reach chennai airport @ 11 am , do you have advice?
thanks
reta
A day is good enough for mahabalipuram . Another day is fine for pondicherry . Hotels are in the region of Rs600 -Rs2000 a day . Transport is not really a problem . From the airport call taxi is avaliable or alternatively you can book some rooms close to the airport as yours will be a short stay .
how about train or bus from airport to triplicane area? (its good place to stay for women?) i just know this are from google :)or you have recomended area to stay that save for women? near temple and some interesting place around city
There is no direct bus to triplicane from the airport . You will have to get to mount road and from there get an auto . Triplicane is off mount road and very close by . There are no direct trains as well . You will be better off with a prepaid auto or call taxi from Mount road . Staying at triplicane is cheaper compared to mylapore . You can try the broadlands at triplicane .That lodging is cheap and quite comfortable , i believe .
Welcome to Chennai...I hope you will have a comfortable stay here.
Mahabalipuram is not far from Chennai. You can easily reach there by bus.
How long are you planning to stay? Safty is not a big concern for women in Chennai.
Hi pachuchu1977, i will stay 3 its enough time right?, i just check your blog and its interesting , i love photography too, its save bring a big camera in hand when we around the chennai city?
and mybe give me advice about culture there, like what cloth we must wear? the attitude etc?
because i know you are women and foreigner too
regards.
reta
If you mean 3 weeks about your stay here, it's good, 3 months - plenty and if it is 3 days not enough. Thanks for the comments on my blog too.
It is a good idea to bring your camera along with you. You dont want to miss any.
If you have done a bit of home work about Indian culture, Chennai has almost the similar. People are pretty cool, friendly. Food is really great here, vegetarian. When you travel you should try new food and I think thats the best adventure you can do in a city.
It is going to be really hot...I mean Really HOT when you are here, so try some summer cloths. I wouldn't recommend mini skirt or shot shots( You will stick out like a sore thumb)but go for some loose pants or jeans and comfortable top. Get ready with some sun-lotions.
Try public transport if you really want to feel the city and auto rickshas do over charge foreigners. And if your budget lets you, you can get some peaceful time in some beachside resorts in Mahabalipuram. There are some not very expensive ones there.
Good luck to you

Hello everyone...thank you for all response...very very helpfull..mybe we can make meet and great while im in chennai..
Mahabilapuram will take a very full day. Between the cultural center and the Shore Temple complex, it is a lot to cover but well worth it. Chennai has at least two days of stuff as well. Do your research as you will need tight scheduling and you do not have time to see it all. The city is very large and the traffic is very bad. Plan on at least 10min/km when scheduling transit times.
Pondicherry will take 1-2 days depending on how efficient you are. The Botanical Garden is beautiful, just remember your DEET. Pondy has a completely different feel from Chennai. Big Indian city vs. little French village. Great food and hotels.
On the womens hostels, it depends on what you are looking for. They are very reasonable but can come with a lot of rules. There are conventional hotels all over Chennai that are reasonably priced.
BTW, Bangalore and Kerala are only close if you consider an 8 hour train ride short. They are not a day trip from Chennai/
Better to stay in heart of the city to cover all places. If you are looking for good hotel you can see in google.Or you can prefer serviced apartment which are very good and rent on daily basis.
Traffic is very much in the morning and evening hours. So plan your programme accordingly. You can visit Pondicherry also by road from Mahablipuram. From Podycherry you can directly go to Banagalore by bus.It is almost 8-9 hours travel.
If you need any more info don't hesitate to ask
