Dealing with homesickness in Denmark

Hello everyone,

Being an expat in Denmark can turn out to be a wonderful human, social or professional adventure... with potential moments of nostalgia and homesickness along the way.

What are your personal tips to prevent homesickness?

How do you deal with such feelings?

Are there shops or stores offering products from your home country in Denmark? Or maybe venues with music and ambiance from your homeland?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Homesickness as defined on Wikipedia is 'the distress or impairment caused by an actual or anticipated separation from home. Its cognitive hallmark is preoccupying thoughts of home and attachment objects.'

Preoccupying thoughts of home and attachments objects

Try not to occupy yourself with thoughts from home. Best way to deal is try occupying yourself with activities in Denmark. Have a social and professional life. Try and create a new world of thoughts for yourself.

Ofcourse, it does not mean to forget the thoughts of home, but remember it to refresh yourself in a positive way rather than having it use itself for creating home sickness.

Try to have friends or family belonging to same country, same region. That helps. It makes you feel like home away from home.

Most important thing here is to be strong yourself. Remember that thoughts are all from your own brain, so, its you only, who can control what to think and what not to think. When to think and when not to think.

Hope that helps.
