Art and culture in Indonesia

Many will be aware of Indonesia's vast range of local cultures, but few will be aware Indonesia has a position in the international art world.
As a start to this thread I wish to make readers aware of an upcoming event in Jakarta I'll be visiting  at some point over the next few days.

August 25 - 28 2016

The 8th Edition of The First & The Biggest Art Fair in Indonesia,
Bazaar Art Jakarta 2016
At The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place

Apart from the venue being an excellent place with very nice food, the event should be very interesting.

I took a little jaunt over there on Thursday afternoon, enjoying the event tremendously.
I very strongly recommend this as a must for anyone with even the slightest interest in art.
The organisers have done a terrific job, making me see why this is the premier international art event in Indonesia.

The first two hours flew by as I wandered around the stands, looking at a wide variety of wonderful works and chatting with artists. I was only there four hours as time was an issue for a couple of friends I went with, but I could have spent two days in there and still not done everything I wanted.

A great afternoon and evening.

Some art things are always around, including street artists making their living creating whatever the customers ask for,
These are always under the walkways to the south of the old town, Jakarta.

Small art shops are dotted around, commonly being found in small back streets, very often in poorer areas.
Advertising is for other people, but they seem to manage to make a crust.

It says to list the URL of the image. I don't know how to do that. I have images, plenty, and usually just upload to Facebook for to friends via Email. So I am lost as to how to share images. I don't see an attachment function. Ricker

To add a picture, upload to photobucket, flickr or whatever, then share the link in your post.

Ok thanks. Not sure I need more work however. Ricker

Chinese ballet in Indonesia

I found an interesting art/cultural/photography place this morning.
The menu looked pretty good and the coffee was excellent. I don't go that way very much but I'll try lunch there next time I pass.
The lady who I think owned the place could speak English and seemed to be able to speak Japanese as well.
It was a very pleasant and relaxing sit down away from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta.

Another one coming up

27 - 30 July.

See this - an absolute must visit event.
Last year's was nothing short of fantastic and I'm told this one is going to be even better.

Bazaar Art Jakarta is set to return for the ninth time under a new name, the Art Jakarta 2017, at The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place shopping mall in South Jakarta from July 27 to 30.

Art enthusiasts can expect to see a plethora of local and overseas artwork from Indonesian and foreign galleries, including from Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, China and France. Among the featured artwork will be those created by Richard Winler, Arifin Neif, Lugas Syllabus, Laksamana Ryo, Putu Sutawaijaya, Masayoshi Nojo, David Gerstein, Zhu Jinshi, Chun Kwang Young, Jean Franncois Rauzier and more.

The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta - an absolute must for anyone with any interest in art.
I arrived at about 4.30pm and spent hours in the place, only leaving after 10 because I was getting very tired and my wife would have changed the locks if I'd been out much later.
Words like, "terrific", "wonderful" and "great" bounce around my thoughts as I recall the hours I spent there.
The event organisers were clearly very good at their jobs and the artists were way beyond interesting.
The beauty of the VIP day is there are less people around so you get more chances to chat to the artists - a serious bonus.

This is not a "If I'm passing" sort of event, this is a "Make sure you see it" job.

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

This promises to be a good one and the hotel is excellent...

(9/10/2017) Bali mourns the loss of one of its most illustrious sons with the death of I Nyoman Gunarsa.

A tireless promoter of Balinese art, Gunarsa received his formal training at the Academy of Indonesian Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta where he also later taught. His paintings form part of important private and museum collections around the globe and are also prominently featured at Museum Seni Lukis Kontemporer in Klungkung that Gunarsa founded in 1989

I was able to meet Pak Nyoman several times Fred, and he was a wonderful man.

As you point out, Indonesia has lost one of its greatest artists.  He will be missed.

Art stage have been doing wonderful work so this event is very probably going to be worth a visit.

Which are the best photo exhibitions?

https://www.facebook.com/MuseumMACAN/

The new Museum MACAN is a very interesting place and well worth a visit.
I've been twice and had a lovely time on both occasions.

One of Jakarta's best known and trustworthy art auctioneers, Sidharta, is holding one of their very popular Artfordable art auctions this Sunday, 3 December at 1:30 PM.  The sale will be held at Galeri 678, Jalan Kemang Selatan Raya No. 125A in South Jakarta.

You can find more details and review the 165 lots to be offered at their web site:

I have no idea but I'd love to visit a few.

Museum MACAN is just off the Jakarta/Tangerang toll so it's easy to get to and there's plenty of parking.
They have a new exhibition starting soon.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (MACAN) is opening a brand new exhibition titled “Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow” on May 12. The exhibition focuses on the works of the titular Japanese artist.

Must see event

Art Jakarta is nothing short of fantastic.

I'm kicking myself because I can't get to Jakarta to visit this one.
Seriously, this event is always amazing.

Finding art shops in Indonesia is pretty easy. Idug this one out whilst wandering around Cirebon a short time ago.

Can't forget to snap any passing artists

I'm not into art but I must admit I think Asian artist are pretty damn good and I enjoy the authentic/ natural/ landscapes look of paintings etc (if that's the correct term to use)

I was never bothered about art, mostly because my old art teacher was rubbish at his job and totally failed to explain what art really is.
After many years of thinking art just was rubbish scribbled for idiots with too much cash to pretend to like, I realised art varies from the terrible to the fantastic, but my art teacher was a prat.

Museum MACAN is an interesting place I've visited many times.

Edwin's Gallery stands upon a 2000 m2 piece of land in the hip Kemang area of Jakarta. The gallery was established in 1984. The primary aim of the gallery is to provide a meeting ground for artists and art lovers, and to give an up-to-the minute picture of what is happening within the discourse of contemporary art in Indonesia and the world.

Hi Fred,
It's nice to see that you are interested in art.
I am a sculptor and I make paintings too.
I'd like to plan a sculpture exhibition in jakarta but still don't know where.
I don't want to make it in a gallery because they usually ask for a certain style of work and new pieces as my sculptures that I'd like to show are, eventhough they are modern, but in a several styles and old pieces.
I prefer to make it in a place where the expat are because in my opinion they are having more appreciation in art. It could be in a restaurant/cafe or any place where the expats gather.
I'd to ask whether you can give me a suggestion or recomendatio to manifest this plan.
Btw, I teach art too.

Thank you
Hanung Mahadi

Nb: I want to show you some photos of my works but I don't know how to enter the URL

Sorry I had to remove your post for editing, but it will reappear as soon as the contact details are edited out.

There are spaces in Jakarta that have been known to host less formal exhibitions one being near Old town.
Problem there is 3 flights of stairs and no lift.

I'll be entering ARTmoments in about 30 minutes, but I haven't eaten since 4am and this mall is a fatty's paradise. :D

Artmoments is very much worth a visit - I had a very nice few hours enjoying the art and a few very long chats with some extremely interesting artists.

It's on until Sunday so you still have chance to visit.
