Business etiquette in Poland

Hello everybody,

As you know, professional habits may differ from one country to another. In order to help newly arrived expats better understand their new professional environment in Poland, we warmly encourage you to share information and insights about the do's and don'ts in the workplace.

For instance, are there office manners? How do you greet your co-workers? Do you greet your management differently? Is there a dress code? Particular rules to observe? Maybe a professional body language?

On another level, what is key for a successful professional meeting? Are there any steps to follow? How do you a start a negotiation?

In other words, what are the most important things to know for a successful professional integration in Poland?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience!

Julien

My "business" experience is limited, but a few words about greetings and shaking hands: it seems to me that generally (in social situations, as well) men shake hands more frequently than in North America. A stranger may approach the person you're talking to, and offer his hand to you, as well as your acquaintance. Although one may observe older men kissing women's hands, this is no longer common, and not at all expected. However, many people have told me that a man usually should not extend his hand to a woman unless, of course, she does.

If others on this board know differently, I look forward to reading about it, and other observations about business manners.

This is so well observed.
Yes, I was some 20 years welcome to kiss the woman's hand. Noverdays, most women I know don't like it. Including me. However, it is still expected from a man to open the door for a woman and let hef through first.
Also, I must mentione, since I came back to Poland, I find it very strange that some companies, that called a meeting on their premisses, thid not offer even a tee or coffe. If you own a company an want to welcome clients...this is the way to go.
