just arrived and based in silicon oasis for work. but absolutely no idea where to go for general shop? downtown? and pub/bars night out in the evening
any help welcome and happy for anyone to join me for a drink or coffee

You could go to many places any time if you drive. The nearest mall to you is Mirdif City Center and also you can go to Dragon Market. Basically you are in the center somewhat so you have plenty of options, google.
