Any Updates on the newly passed 12 month tourist visa for US citizens

The letter states 'the reciprocity came into force on May 29th' this is after Obama visit. One can assume that the discussion between Obama and vietnam's head honcho must have taken place when he was here. Any ways whether it was signed or ratified long ago doesn't really matter to me. I just hope that we all can get it soon. Mine is due for a renewal soon.

It also states IN THE FIRST SENTENCE of the letter that, "On April 9, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam approved a plan to issue 12-month, multiple-entry visas to American citizens who travel temporarily for business or tourism."

Why would Obama discuss something that was a done-deal six weeks or more earlier? Your assumption falls into the classic explanation of "ass-u-me". If you think that something two heads of state discussed would come "into force" within days, you know nothing of international politics.

I have a certificate of visa exemption. This was originally valid for 90 days, but now it is 6 months. Immigration office at Ba Ria, which is for Ba Ria-Vung Tau area, was not aware when the one year visa would be available.

Its a 6 month stamp when you come back into VN and the 3 month stamp remains for within VN. It would be nice if VN came into the 21st century and got rid of the whole ridiculous stamping system.

Silly question but

Can Canadians get this one year visa ??
Just asking !!!

This is per an agreement between the governments of Vietnam and the US, so it only applies to US passport holders.

As a Canadian, you have the advantage that ~1/2 of the world's people aren't wishing you dead because your government creates endless, needless, pointless wars.

I actually lived most of my years in Ol So Cal ..
So I'm kinda not really but sorta maybe Canadian ..
But I do still hold my Canadian passport ..
I loved living in the Good Ol USA ..

I'm here in Vietnam now living the dream and teaching ..
As for the visa sitch guess I will continue the Lao Bao run ..

I do appreciate your getting back to me ....

I was just told by an expat on FB that it is now available... I'm a bit sceptical after everything I've been reading lately. Anyone have hard facts to back that up?

Does he/she have one? If not, then...

If someone is getting ready for a new visa, just use Skype to call the Consulate in San Francisco. I've found them very helpful in the past.

I've been told by several less than relaible sources that they aren't quite sure when the 1 year visas will be available again.  I imagine the sqeals of displeasure from the people that benefit from a $10 stamp costing $390 (3 month extension) have been going on non-stop since this was announced.  That's $390, up from $320, for those keeping score.

Another hard-earned tidbit for anyone that likes hard-earned tidbits -  you do need a business visa/DN type in order to search for job and/or for the 3 month period in which the work permit is being processed.  That visa must be connected to your current employer, so if you have a visa through an "agent" and are applying for a w/p you have to get a visa switched to your employer...by getting a new visa.  In order to get that new visa guess what you have to do..if you guessed "leave Vietnam and then re-enter?" you are correct!

:idontagree:

If you have to leave the country for a visa, go to the embassy in Phnom Penh.

Three month, multiple entry visa in one hour for only $85; single entry $75. No BS, just a visa.

See posts #12 & #114.

I was denied on 01 June and sent the details to ACSHanoi per the request in their June newsletter.

They replied telling me there was nothing they could do to move the process forward.

Then they published the same lame request in their July newsletter.

I forgot. This is Vietnam. The only way to get things done is to have enough people complain or get the newspaper involved LOL

I think the 12 month visa permit will only be issued if the U.S goes through with TPP. Like most things in Vietnam we are at the mercy of the immigration officials who sometimes move at the speed of 'light'.

Only for US cotizens? That sucks!

Why? It's not like we can actually obtain one.

According to the Visa agents on Facebook, The one year multiple entry Tourist Visa is available now. $50.

That's a very good deal for Americans coming into Viet Nam.

I'd say so. My current 1 year Visa cost me $585, (including the stamping fee at airport).

Zep--

I just paid for 6mos business visa yesterday for $295.  What are my chances of getting a refund and obtaining 1yr visa before 9/1?

Zero. This is Vietnam; there are NO refunds!

Hi everyone, 1-year multiple tourist visa for American citizens is available now.

Fee for 1-year visa letter: 50$

Processing time: 2 working days.

A visa agent told me yesterday that even though it is a one-year visa, holders still have to leave the country every three months. Have you heard this? It makes no sense, though it still could be true.

Thanks!

You really should put the full costs, not just the cost of the letter. If you are already in VN, I presume the applicant will have to do a border run to activate this visa.

This visa is similar to visa policy of USA spent for Vietnamese.

Visa will valid for 1 year, but you will be allowed so stay in Vietnam for 3 months. and you will need to exit every 3 months.

But with each later entry, you do not need to pay for visa letter or stamping fee. So I think that it's still good news for American.

The fee for visa letter: 50$

Stamping fee paid at the airport: 135$

As usual there is always a catch, if you have to do a visa run every three months you're better off with the 1 year business visa.

I knew it sounded too good to be true. After living here for 9 years you know that things like that are too cheap. Best to get the same one year visa again Zep, it's sounds like less hassle.

Just a quick update, I spoke to an agent in Ha Noi and yes you must leave and re-enter every 3 months. The cost is 185usd all up and there is no charge each time you re-enter Viet Nam. The hassle and extra cost of leaving plus a visa in say Cambodia every three months doesn't sound too viable to me.

{snip}

Really? Vietnamese in the US have to leave every three months and re-enter?

There is NO WAY that is the case. Once a VN citizen enters the US, they can stay within its borders for one year. This is NOT "similar".

It would be a lot less egregious if checking in with the police every three months were sufficient, as with those who are married to VN citizens.

Consular officer at US Embassy agrees to issue 1-year multiple visa for Vietnamese. but 1-year is the duration of visa, not the duration of stay.

The  staff of Department of Homeland Security at the airport will give the permitted duration of stay in US. Not stay within US for 1 year.

Kathy, at least in the US you don't have to leave and re-enter as you do in VN. As usual the VN governemnt has to make things complicated.
