Dino & Gary

I say I don't know where, because I was born in Canada, raised in England, went back to Canada, then moved to Spain, where I lived for 12 years and have just this August arrived on Belizian soil, having never even heard of the place 6 months ago, but wastold about it by a friend.
Anyway, I moved here with my companion, a Green-winged Macaw called Dino. I've been living in Corozal Town since I got here but in January I'm going to move to the Stann Creek area for 3 months to check it out, having driven down the Hummingbird highway last week and fell in love with what I saw. I'm hoping by the middle of next year I'll have decided where I want to live and will get that little dream Mennonite house :)
In the mean time, I'd like to get to know ex-pats living in the Stann Creek or Toledo areas, for when I come down there. See you soon! Gary

Dino & Gary

Thanks for the welcome Sharon & Yud. Although I would so much like to settle down right now, I want to make sure I pick what's right for me, and that's away from the touristy spots. Had enough of that in Spain! :)

Welcome Gary and Dino!  Is that Dino's picture?  He is a gorgeous bird. :D  We are planning to settle in San Pedro in the next 2 years.  Good luck with your search and networking!  There are lots of very friendly and helpful people at this forum, I have learned a lot from them!

i noticed that you have a macaw. did you have any trouble getting the bird into the country? what about leaving the country with the bird? i waqs told that you can't bring them in or leave with them once they are in the country. i have 7 birds, 2 of which are macaws, a protected bird in belize.

Dino & Gary

Hi. Yes, I had a hard time bringing him in, but it can be done, if you have the patience and the funds. In fact, I've written down what it takes: http://garyscanlon.com/dino/internation … ravel.html. If you plan on bringing your birds, plan well in avance. I have a friend who is bringing in a Scarlet Macaw with her next week from the States but CITES in the USA took 120 days to process the export permit! In Spain it only took 14 days. Then there's the cost, all the tests, permits etc for all of them, and boy, you had better be determined. There was no way on Earth I was coming without mine, so I persisted until I got through all the red tape. If I can be of any help, I know all the right contacts you'll need here in Belize, which will make life a lot easier than I had it.

Hi Gary, welcome to Expat.com, :)

It might be interesting for future expats that you write an article on the subject in the interactive Guide of expatriate life in Belize under the chapter "Miscellaneous".

This would surely help future expats to Belize :)

Have a nice day further
