Third EC Volcano Alert-Level Raised: Reventador... Baños At Major Risk

The 3,560-meter-tall Reventador volcano, 90 miles east of Quito, has just had its alert level raised to orange, the second highest level.

However, Reventador is in a jungle area.  It poses little threat to human populations although it did cover Quito with an inch of ash in 2003.

Of more concern is the increased activity this week from the Tungurahua volcano (see Tungurahua thread).

The tourist- and Gringo-friendly town of Baños, population 25,000, sits at the foot of Tungurahua.  Geologists say that Baños would probably be destroyed in the case of a major eruption.  The threat level at Tungurahua was also raised to orange, late this week.

Ecuador's largest active volcano, Cotopaxi, remains a major concern.  See the Cotopaxi thread for more on the situation there.

Retired U.S. volcanologist George Lassiter -- who lives part-time in Ecuador -- calls the simultaneous activity in three volcanoes alarming.

"This is almost unprecedented and presents a very scary scenario," says Lassiter.

"If we have major eruptions of both Tungurahua and Cotopaxi close together, it would overwhelm rescue and recovery efforts.

"I shudder to think about it."

Says Lassiter:  "Cotopaxi is more dangerous in terms of potential eruptive strength than Tungurahua, but Tungurahua's location above Baños creates the most concern."

The magma chamber under Cotopaxi is 200 to 300 times larger than Tungurahua's, he says.
