Hi,

A lot of expats dream of becoming self-employed: we would like to help you to make that dream come true.

Can foreigners work as self-employed in Barbados? What are the formalities to work as a freelancer?

What are the pros and cons of this status: social security, tax system, etc.?

How is the freelance market in Barbados?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

You cannot simply turn up in Barbados and expect to work as a freelance in most professions, with some complicated exceptions for for artists, models and musicians.

Your stamp on entry will prohibit any works.

The other exception is if coming short term for a business meeting.

Other than that you will need a work permit - short term permits as possible through a sponsoring firm - but look for it to take several weeks to get one; since you need a sponsoring firm there is little or no chance through that route.

If you find a likely short term freelance appointment - you need to apply for the permits before you get here.

For short term likely no real national insurance requirement - but a fee to pay for professional registration for most occupations (an obscure requirements that most locals and longer term expats are unaware of).

If you are here for more than 26 weeks you pay income tax locally otherwise in your country of origin - when you leave though you will pay withholding tax when you try to take funds from Barbados.

Unless you are getting paid six figures for a short term appointment - it's really not worth the effort.
