Entry Level Oil jobs???

Hi, im a Libyan/British national just graduated from university in Media and received a 2:1.
Im looking for an entry level oil job, and have looked absolutely everywhere on the internet and cant find no information or jobs. Im thinking of just coming down to Tripoli, Libya for a month and searching there. I know my degree is not relevant but it was always done as back up, and this is what I really want to do. Does anyone have any tips or advice? Its greatly appreciated in advance.

Places for oil jobs included:
Rigzone
Oil Careers
Aberdeen Press & Journal
and look heretoo.

What are you wanting to do on a rig? Most of the oilfield service jobs (mud logging, mud engineering, mwd/lwd, wireline, ROV, cementing, geosteering etc.) would be looking to take on trainees with a science or engineering background. If you want to work as a rig hand and start out pushing a mop and painting railings then you don't need any qualifications at all. Get yourself on a greenhands course like the one run by Petrofrac. If you look at the a company such as KCA Drilling you'll see they give preference to those job candidates who have already put themselves through the greenhand course. If you choose that route into the industry, you'll start at the bottom, but roustabouts can become roughnecks, derrickmen, pumpmen, assistant drillers then drillers, then toolpushers and tour pushers. These are jobs where experience counts over qualifications.
I'd say you're probably better off trying to get work in the UK,than Libya. With no experience and no relevant degree, the fact you've got Libyan nationality will give you no advantage here in that line of work.
PM me if you've any more questions... :)

I agree with Mudman, unless you have a technical background, you won't be offered any decent positon in the Oil industry. Why not utilise your media degree and look for a position in that field, be it at an oil company or indeed other industries. Demand for media expertise is on the up in Libya.

my advice to you is to get some experience under you belt in the UK, then you will be in a better position to get offered a decent job in Libya. Easier still, if you are bilingual.
As a start try this website:

Mudman, you are missing the point here the blok said he has dual citizenship and if he is a Libyan then he would be given preferance prior to any expat. My friend go ahead and drop your CV in major Oil corps around Tripoli chances are high for you to get employed in Tripoli, because you are educated obviously fluent with english and arabic that puts a smile on the HR managers faces here.

Hi, thanks for all the kind and informative replies. I will keep researching and will check out all the websites provided by Mudman and expatlibyan.

So Gernademan do you think it would be considered a positive move on my part to actually fly over to Libya and chase up a job in the flesh? As this is what im seriously considering just need to feel more sure about it.

Been in Libya before?

Yes, Ive been to Libya roughly 9-10 times in my life time, so on average a visit every 1-3 years and stays between 2 weeks and 2 months. My last visit was 2007.

^ ...and you still want to come and work here?!?! ;)

But seriously, I would come and talk to people. Visit different companies and ask them questions.
With 2:1 in media and your profile photo, I don't think you want to do what Mudman is describing. I think you're looking for office work, nort field's, no?

Exactly, what is "an entry level job"? Oil & gas companies have more staff employed in the non technical roles than in them.
The drilling & completions departments are just the tip of the iceberg. (It's just they're the most fun bits :) )

^ yep... "non-technical" people are the masters of the universe.

Listen I think it would, but saying that it's not like you won't be able to go back? Another thing you could do is start searching here first Libyainvestment.com & Libyaonline.com under Job seeker's link and send your CV around for a while, you surely will get a reply.

Hello Asad Arif and welcome to Expat.com! :)

This thread is very old.
Could you please start a new thread on the Tripoli forum or post an advert in the Jobs in Tripoli section?

Thank you,
Aurélie

But I am in UAE right now, I am in search of a job. I am a petroleum engineer. Do suggest me something.

Hi there,

I work as a teacher at the Specific Training Centre for Oil Industries in Zawia. Hundreds of trainees are taken on each year and trained in specialisations. They start aged fifteen and graduate three years later. Libya already has a huge pool of local talent related to the oil industry chasing very few jobs. My advice to you is to train as an English language teacher and get into the profession which has served me well for thirty years.

Ciao

Chris
