Hello all:  Can anyone please give me some information about what it is like to live on the King Faisal Specialist Hospital compound.  I have to decide soon whether I want to live on-site or outside.  Many thanks for your help.

Welcome to Expat-blog, Macdin :)

Inside is very comfy, lots of facilities, and easy access to the work place. Outside would be beneficial if you were saving a substantial sum of money in lieu of the facilities, by opting for it.

Everything depends on need.

At least it's a compound.  Some of us are stuck in other places.

Very good point CivEngr

Yeah--but please, all compounds are not created equal!  I'd be better off in an apt. or villa without a curfew as opposed to my compound!:mad::mad:

Who cares about a curfew.  I get up at 4 AM so I am early to the hay.  Besides if you are out late, what can they do?  Through u in jail. :o

Obviously I care about a curfew and if this applied to you, you wouldn't like it--but since, as a male, it doesn't, you dismiss it.  I, for one, want to be treated as an adult, not like a child, and having a 'curfew' is demeaning to a person my age.

As for consequences, if you miss curfew, a report is written by security and added to your file.  After a couple of these, you're sent home.

I don't know about you--maybe you're luckier than many of us--but I can't afford to go back to the economic situation in the States with no job.

musicman

Curfews are only imposed on Compounds supporting State run institutions, viz; Military Hospital, Security Forces Hospital, National Guard, KKESH etc. All other private compounds are as free as the land of the free and the brave.

Wow!  Hit a nerve there.  I was just messing w/ u.  I didn't know they existed and it is a pretty stupid rule since we are all adults.  I have peeps enter and leave the apartments where I live at all times of day and night.  Bummer for you though.

musicman

It can be very tough for those who live in such places, especially single women. Actually an apartment outside without all the compound facilities would bring much more peace of mind.

There used to be a time when single men/women, who were not hotel guests, were not even allowed to knock on hotel room doors here. Every single floor had a special security guard seated at the ehtry/exit points doing security checks.

Civeng, don't messy with the puddy tat, she has sharp claws.

We have lots of petty rules on my compound but nothing close to a curfew. I think that it's typical Saudi mentality to control women because the men have no self control and unfortunately Allicat is caught up in it.

Take good note CvEng, the warning is coming from one already clawed....

One thing that frightens me out of my wits is how the expats living behind the Fort Knox style concrete barriers of the many western compounds in the city would get out in a hurry in the event of an emergency, or even a heart attack, God forbid!

Alliecat

Yep, you hit a nerve and I apologize for if I over-reacted.  Thing is, take the daily frustration you, as a man, face  and multiply it by TEN to know what a single, working woman goes through on a daily basis.

Now I'm not complaining (well, okay, I am lol) but when it goes way over the top, as in c-u-r-f-e-w -- I tend to have a short fuse ;)

I've already got an escape route planned.  Well, not if I have a heart attack lol but rather, if my 'compound' was ever attacked!

No biggie.  I am trying to understand believe me.  I still have a lot to learn.

Great thread, I'm also heading to the king faisal compound, if anyone is living there, I would definitely like some input! I'm assuming when you said curfew that this applies to some compounds and not all. But please anyone with experience in the king faisal hospital compound, please chime in! =D

faysg

Aliecat you should have worked in Jedah National Guard hospital, the compound was mixed males and females and no curfew ,socially was very friendly atmosphere.
