Hello! I'm trying to find information on if it's possible to move to Beijing without corporate sponsorship. My boyfriend is living and teaching there with a working visa, and I'd like to be able to join him. Is this possible to do without getting a job first?

I am afraid that it is a Yes and No answer.
The fact that your boyfriend is working here has, according to the Chinese Govt., is irrelevant. I even had one instance a couple of years ago with a German "family" when the wife's request to come as his spouse was rejected since they were not officially married but were a "common-law" couple (ie had been living together for 15 or so years with a kid but no certificate).
The Yes bit is that you can come as a tourist, or enrol in a language school, or try one of the Mr. Fixit companies that can provide you with a sino-bluff solution.
