Hoping to relocate to Budapest

Hi everyone

Me and my partner are looking to relocate to Budapest for a year maybe two. We have visited twice and we love the city. I was hoping you could provide me with a bit of advice.

I'll give you a bit of background about ourselves and what we are looking for.

I'm a 27 year old researcher at a the University of Central Lancashire. I specialise in waste, in particular food waste. I have worked for a major banking group as a sales manager, a local authority in waste operations and I now carry out waste/resource related consultancy and research for a waste management centre within the university. I hold a BSc in Geography and an MSc in Sustainable Waste Management.

My partner is a 26 year old logistics co-ordinator for a global logistics company. She has vast experience in office based environments and her main strengths lie in logistics.

We currently earn around £50,000 combined. We are looking to move over to Budapest around the end of 2016 early 2017. We are looking to stay for between 1-2 years.

At present we are reviewing whether it will be possible for us to achieve this goal. We are aware that wages are much lower in Budapest than in the UK. This isn't an issue for us as long as we can rent an apartment, have a social life and pay the bills!

The first concern we have is whether there are adequate job opportunities for us in Budapest? We would both like a full time job. The higher we can be paid the better but as I mentioned as long as we are comfortable money wise we do not have an issue with accepting a much lower wage than in the UK. Are you aware of the type of wage we can expect in relation to our experience and qualifications? We would both take up learning the language to increase our employment opportunities and would have over a year to practice before moving over.

The apartments we have identified and like sit in the region of £400-500 per month. If we take into account the common charge, food, socialising and maybe tranport (we like to walk/cycle and budapest seems very walkable in our experience) could we expect to find jobs that would cover our expenses?

Also we have a cat that we would be keen to bring with us, or she may have to be left with a relative. How amenable are landlords with having pets in apartments?

Thanks everyone, I hope we find that this achievable and get to come and live in budapest soon!

Josh

Strongly recommend lining up a job before you come to Hungary. Plenty of online job sites to look into. Some mentioned here:

Thanks klsallee. I'm hoping we can do just that. In fact I doubt we would make the move without having job security in place. This move really is about us enjoying our time in Budapest rather than only just scraping by and not experiencing what the city has to offer.

Second time answering this question.
I seriously think people should travel and experience places while they still are on the young side of life.
As far as making a killing money wise in Hungary, forget it.
My niece lives in SF, Calif and also does logistics, I am not really sure what that all involves though, I know she is making over $100,000 a year and just landed that new job, she quit her $80,000 a year office manager job because she was underpaid. In Hungary you wouldn't even come close to that with 2 incomes.

Basically, it is the management of moving things from point A to point B on demand and according to need. If you order something on-line for home delivery, logistics gets it to you from the warehouse.

Logistics is a growing field in Hungary. Often involving trucking companies for the physical transport (I suspect because the Hungarian drivers are paid less than those from Western Europe). There is a new logistic center near where I live, which I first realized when I saw more and more trucks passing through our tiny village this year.

Thanks, I am so "old school" I barely know what is going on in the "real" world these days.
My niece does that, travels to Vegas at least once a month, they put her up in Trump Towers etc. Sounds like a interesting job. Pay is great too.
