Right,

So I have my work permit, I just went and applied for my ID card today so should have that soon and I'm looking into the residency stuff (although I've been told a lot of people don't bother with this as its not really necessary?).

Now I'm confused about NI.

My employer asked for my NI number and without even thinking I said yes of course and gave them my NI number from the UK. I am now wondering if that's incorrect- do I need to apply for a Maltese NI number or something?

Work accepted my UK one with no questions and I'd told them I was getting it from my old UK employer (as I didn't know it off the top of my head) but they are not helpful with queries like this. No one seems to know how anything works!

Any help appreciated!

As far as I can see (and NB I'm no expert - reader beware), you get an NI number from the Department of Social Security, which is part of the Ministry of Social Policy.

Here is their webpage - http://www.msp.gov.mt/services/subpages … .asp?id=69 .  See item d. in their list of tasks.

If there's a page saying "here's how to apply for your NI number", I haven't found it.  Perhaps you might like to contact them.

Its a legal requirement if you intend to live here for more than three months, but your work permit is one category of residency permit, so you are sorted :-)

Its called a social security number not NI number in Malta

Ah thats great that the work permit covers the residency! thank you :)

Thanks for the link, I totally forgot they call it social security so I'll have a look around the site too, thanks for all your help :)

You need to go into your local social security office on a week day.
