Can we bring our two dogs into Mauritius from South Africa, Cape Town?

Hi All,

We are going to be relocating to Mauritius at the end of August and have heard mixed reviews about getting our two dogs (babies) across.

We have contacted the Division of Veterinary Services in Mauritius and they have made no mention of any issues that we may have in relocating our pets. However pettravel.com has told us that as we are coming from a HIGH Rabies area they will not allow our dogs in unless they have been in either a low or non rabies environment for at least 6 months. (both dogs are micro-chipped, sterilised and are up-to-date on all their vaccines)

Is anyone able to shed some light on this, as we are becoming quite stressed out that we may not be able to bring them across...

Other than that we can't wait for this new adventure.

Thanks for your help,
Emma & Rory

Hi TaylorsinMauritius,

Welcome to expat-blog!  ;)

You can read the following thread to get some info :

- CAN I BRING MY DOG TO MAURITIUS?

What you can do in my opinion as you already contacted the Division of Veterinary Services in Mauritius, is to ask them to send you a mail stating that there is no issue concerning your dogs. You will be able to print the document and show it to whom it may concern.

Best of luck  :)
Bhavna

Thanks so much Bhavna,

That sounds like a good idea - I will get in touch with them shortly.

Have a super day,
Emma

:/

The original poster already knows what to do  and what he is really asking is about his area of origin  and rabies ?
Only the authorities can answer that - and if they can confirm in writing it would be better  so that he does not encounter any hassle in the future.

FWIW: Here is also and active thread with the latest info as per the posters and what they have experienced :

Hi
I hope you don't mind me jumping in on your enquiry.  I am a Travel Consultant and Africa Specialist.  If you want to see Cape Town and a game park then I suggest you fly into Capetown and spend 4 days seeing all that Capetown and the Winelands have to offer.  Then you can do one of two things 1/ hire a car and drive the garden route to Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape) there you will find 4 game parks (all malaria free). 2/ or fly to Port Elizabeth.
Then you can fly out of PE via Jo'burg to your next destination.

Obviously this info is just to give you an outline - there is nothing better than getting info from the 'locals'.
Hope you have a  great time.
Cheers Barbara

Hi
I am bringing my 2 dogs to Mauritius from the UK, so am not able to advise on the quarantine.  But you need to have all the relevant vaccinations and rabies (up to date) have their bloods tested after to ensure boosters (if needed) have worked.  They need to be wormed etc.  Bitches need to be spayed (i know this 'cos mine are little ladies) and I assume dogs have to been done as well.  You need to get an import permit from Mauritius and have an export permit from SA.

There are also charges for the impartation  Rs 500 ea (this is what I'm paying) not sure if this is relevant ot the size of the dog.
Your best bet is to contact Mrs Boodoo at this address - she is very helpful  [email protected].  YOu will then get all the info relevant to your dogs.

Cheers

Hi
It really is best to get the correct up to date information from the Government department at The Ministry of Agriculture, Vet dept in Reduit.

Contact details for Ministry of Agriculture vet division: Veterinary Services)
Tel: (230) 454 1016, 454 1017, 466 6662
Fax: (230) 464-2210
moa-dvs[at]govmu.org

Probably best to get it all in writing as I know import and export regarding South Africa is much different than say to the UK . So either fax or email in fact best do both ;)

I ship dogs & Cats out regularly to other Countries, I have not done one to SA this year since the laws changed, but I know there were more rules than usual previously.

Don't chance anything, get the correct advice, paperwork, requirements, blood tests etc from Mrs Boodoo at the above contact details.

You must get the correct advice as you really do not want to take any chances that on landing here something is not right with either the paperwork or tests - if wrong then your pet is shipped straight back to your Country etc.

Good luck - Many people bring their pets here from SA with no troubles :)

Rosiewestie,

Thank you so very much for your very positive response.

We have emailed off all relevant and required information to Mrs Boodoo and I will also send on a fax at some stage today. (Thanks for the tip).

Here's holding thumbs that we don't have any snags and thanks again for assisting in easing our concerns.

HI Emma & Rory,

We just moved from Cape Town to Mauritius.
There's absolutely no problem to bring your dog from South Africa to Mauritius (just some breeds are not accepted) but it is a very long process (+/- 6months to get all your paperwork - vaccinations - blood tests done)
Our dog, labrador, should arrive this Thursday! I can't wait!
There's also 30 days quarantine!
We did everything via Global Paws...
Hope it helps!

Sophie

Hi Sophie,

Shoo not great news for us as we are leaving for the Island at the end of August, going to be a long lonely few months without our pups!  We are still waiting to hear back from Mrs Boodoo at the Ministry of Agriculture on the import permits, so not much we can do until then.

We have also been in contact with global paws - glad to hear that someone else has been through them :)

Did you put your dog into kennels or were you able to get a family member to look after it? This is what we are going to struggle with as we have two very energetic pups and they need quite a lot of attention.

Enjoy seeing your pooch on Thursday!
Emma

Shame! Unfortunately it is a very long process.

We left 1 month before the dog so he was at the kennel 'Pet O Tel' in Ottery -> They also work with Global Paws.
The good thing is that they exercise your dog every day.
I had friends coming every Saturday to pick up my dog to go for a long walk.

Global Paws should be able to give you the list with all the steps you need to follow!

If your dogs are already neutered / sprayed and if they already had rabbies tests in the past and are chipped then it will probably take something like 4 months to get your dog here.

Brilliant, I will have a look in to the Pet O Tel in Ottery - perhaps we can do the same and get some friends / family to go and visit them on the weekends.

Both boys have been neutered and vaccines are all up-to-date although no rabies test have been done on them but they are all up-to-date, thank goodness for that - so here's hoping that it may only be a four month delay and not six!

Thanks again for your help, this forum has certainly saved my sanity!!   :thanks:

I am glad I could help :-)

If I were you I would already do the 1st rabies vaccination as soon as possible!!
Note that your dogs must be chipped before doing the rabbies vaccination otherwise it won't be valid!

Good luck!!

wow ! When my hubby announced that we should consider moving to Mauritiys, I panicked and all I could think of was can I take my dogs ? Thank you for the information everyone.
