Malta is very small, too small to adapt?

This question often comes up when I'm chatting with people from all horizons, either types living here or having lived here for a while, some planning to come over or even others just curious and wondering.

It would be interesting to get to know different opinions and views on this?

I am about to move to Malta(St. Julian's) in less than a month and recently I started wondering the same - is Malta too small for me?Personally I am a very lonely person, practically the only person I contact with is my wife and her friends so for me it's easy to answer that question - no, Malta is not too small for me because I don't care about people surrounding me.
But I guess for other people the size of the country might be a problem, but I think the biggest problem is the fact that it's an island, you are separated by other nations, countries by hundreds of killometers, you can't just get in your car and drive to the border of the neighbour country, you have to travel through water or air to get there..I don't think places like Malta are places for everyone, I think that's a place for people of a very different breed.

I hope my comment doesn't sound very weird. :)

Regards,
George

When I was living there it did sometimes have the feeling of being small, but how big do you need it to be ? If you lived in Russia for example would you travel the whole country ?

Malta is enormous!
Look at this map https://www.google.com/maps/dir/35.9788 … !3e2?hl=en
It takes almost 5 hours to walk from Valletta to the northern part of the big island.
That's huge for me, because I live in a small town surrounded by mountains and I can walk its entire distance in 40 minutes.

And then, there's the sea, everywhere!
I'm not sure why people suffer from "island sickness", feeling trapped on a small island. They should try living in an even smaller place surrounded by mountains.
The sea and the sky provide all the space I will ever need. :)

They even have tornadoes ^^

lol - even the local hosts need to get off the rock now and again = it does you good.

Your route might look cute on the Google map but for the most parts it is really disgusting and along non-scenic polluted main roads! No one in Malta would consider walking that route. You would mostly experience the enormous traffic  due to the road works on the coastal road.

What are you trying to say ?

Cheers
Ricky

That's exactly the part I can't understand.
I went on a short mountain vacation, couple of days ago, and it was beautiful!

If I could live there, instead of the city I'm in, I totally would, but it's not possible due to lack of income options.

Malta, is at least ten thousand times more beautiful than this mountain.
And you can live there and have income and all the comforts of the modern age.

Why would you want to leave Malta, and go to a less appealing place, with possibly unpleasant people?!
I don't understand that...

Hello Ricky!
I used the google maps route as a visualization aid, to illustrate why I think that Malta is not a terribly small place.
I didn't know that this route is disgusting, but thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind and try to avoid it once I get there. :)

And now I'm having serious doubts that you're actually living in Gozo, George.
That mountain view is amazing, but in 3 days it's just a mountain view.
Malta, on the other hand, is absolutely jam-packed with beauty on every corner.

But I think you guys are going out of your way to be rude today, so I'll take my weekend some place else. :)

I think it's a case of you and two or three other new members are intent on disrupting this 'blog' and should actually be closed down by the owner or admin.

Your post on internet speed was warmly received by all but the rest is like someone in the same land as Mike44 as so aptly described by 'Tearnet' - LaLa land!

All of my posts are with good intentions and with friendly attitude.
I have no idea how my routes can be "disgusting", or why I'm "taking a pee" when I express my opinion about Malta.

I'm glad to find out how you feel about my posts and I would request for the admins to please delete ALL of my posts and if possible to remove my profile.
If I'm doing so much harm to your blog, I'd rather not be a part of it and will be happy to just read the topics.

Thank you and sorry for the harm :)

So that's why you have changed your profile and now live in America!

That is correct.
Since I'm doing so much harm to your blog, you are not entitled to my profile picture or my personal information or e-mail address.
I hope that the Admins will delete all my posts and Topics and will remove my profile. :)

Deithrian,

If you leave you will be making them a favour. They are furious because they are being contradicted. They are not used to it, up to now they have succeeded in appropriating this site and working very hard in misleading honest people coming here for advice. Misleading by emphasising on the negative aspects of Malta, purposely exaggerating them. Completely putting aside all the positive aspects of life in Malta.

You are a future expatriate, you have the right to be here, say what you think and not to justify yourself to anybody, let alone vindictive vampires full of hate.

Let them say what they like (or more precisely what they're capable of). The real majority of international expatriates in this country Know better, enough to be able to sort the Bull from the facts.

I am here to try and help in any way possible honest and sincere foreigners in giving them means to perceive and go by things and situations to enhance and facilitate their stay here. Not make it perfect but to give them tips and advice of best ways to tackle problems and to maximise the benefit of living in Malta.
Therefore I advise you Deithrian, when you're here avoid people like these and look for people that want you to have a nice experience while in Malta. They will show you how to live here and how to focus on the positives (endless positives).

Some say that Malta you like it or you hate it! True as it's true for anything with character!
I prefer to say that Malta is a treasure, either you find it or you don't! but to find it you have to know how to look, where to look and how to dig.

Wishing you plenty of luck and joy in your future adventures.

I understand your point like any view it is just a view... and people dont spend all their time looking at views.. although it can be nice to have one..... Malta has some lovely places just like everywhere else does, and as with everywhere else they have horrible dirty places too.

Malta has much going for it,, lots of history behind it and some lovely people when you find the genuine ones...  sadly Malta doesnt look after what it has in the palm of their hands and it can be so much more given the right management of it....

In fairness we ended up in Malta, not our first choice nor even our second or third... but there were circumstances at the time that dictated we should give it a second chance as the first time we went we hated the place.. horrible and dirty.... full of rip off merchants that was our initial experience . However I can honestly say that am glad we did  give it another chance.. we were in the wrong place, and even when we first arrived to live there it was an eye opener and  learning experience, we learned many things, and most importantly of all what we wanted from our time there. It was an experience i woudnt have wanted to miss. But we soon knew  - say within 12-18 months it was never ever going to be our final place, for many many reasons. We enjoyed 6 years living there made some great friends and still have them even after having left the island a year ago.

We have only been back once to see some friends of ours, but sad to say really dont wish to go back there, we knew within 12 hrs of arrival we had made the right decision to leave it behind and rely on fond memories of people and places and Mellieha itself still has and allways will have a special place in my heart.

Bottom line -  i think you should try it on a short term basis as the reality is often different to the romantic thoughts of what you think it is... but hey we are all different you might love it...lets hope you do and good luck to you

I love Malta , I'm from the UK which everyone seems to want to head too -
Positives less rain, less abusive idiots who want to make my life a misery because my sexuality or perceived sexuality cause them problems - I haven't had one person drive past me here and shout offensive names because they have seen me walk with a stick . The beach- where else could I go swimming with my husband most weekends. The culture and the lifestyles , I like the attitude of the locals and the community spirit . The markets - the opportunity to buy fresh fruit and veg whenever I want it  and I can pretty much find out where it's from. The doctors - finally feel like I was being listened to rather than the attitude of the UK from the minute you get in the egg timer starts before next please . Did I mention the weather ? Even in the wettest winter on record we have had less rain than a whole year in the UK . The opportunity to spend time with my husband - I know not everyone. Would find this a positive but to me being in Malta means I get to see my partner more and we do stuff together.

The negatives : there really isn't that many - the cost of electric items - where my basic range lol ?  people who whine about what a horrible place it is - I feel like saying cheerio don't let the door slam you on the way out - seriously if you not happy why are you here . Mosquitos and cockroaches ... Especially when I become dinner

I am not wearing rose tinted glasses - I am aware Malta has issues however I also am aware that this new government is slowly weeding out those issues.  I agree that I think the driving here is erratic to say the least however I feel safer on the roads here than I did in Italy.  Corruption is rife yes - however I wouldn't say it's more rife than in the UK .

Maybe because it's a smaller island or because the government appear to be cracking down that more things are coming to light.
However I feel safer here - there is less crime people look out for eachother which I think is really nice .

I really don't know why some expats are so intent of painting the island out to be such a terrible place - maybe it's because they want it all to themselves but your attitude puts people off using this great resource and makes people feel uncomfortable.

It doesn't mean I don't respect your rights to an opinion though and I like that we have two sides of the story but maybe it's just the way that you say it .

I am not expecting everyone to come to Malta and like it - many people will and loads won't but everyone has a different story of why there here or of what things are like for them .

Anyways my two cents worth

No, I'll be doing myself a favor.
Why would I want to poison my life dealing with bigots?
If there's one thing I know in life, is that it's entirely possible to live it without having to do at least that.
And I will avoid all contact with people from the UK as a rule of thumb from now on. Definitely learned a lesson here.

Since my posts and topics have not been deleted, I will leave this message instead.

I regret having participated in this community and wish I've never done it.

Wow Toon, you're up to it after-all, a real constructive and substantial comment that might actually be useful and serve somebody who might be looking for good advice! Bravo congratulations. You see how pleasant writing can be when put with just a little effort to being respectful and impartial; talking through your head instead of your foot! By the way speaking of feet, looks like I'm gonna have to eat a shoe!

Deithrian,

Maybe you're right Deithrian, maybe you're absolutely right.

Wish you plenty of luck mate take and keep up the right attitude towards life!

Mike.
