Does anyone know how long it takes to close from inception to end in Brazil? Days or months?

James

It really all depends on how thorough your realtor (corretor de imóveis) is in the transaction, the type and location of the property. It can take anywhere from a week or two, to several months especially if there are any complications.

There are a great many pitfalls for expats buying property in Brazil and unless you're fluent in Portuguese and have prior knowledge of some of the issues surrounding property ownership, property rights, squatter's rights, etc., you should be very cautious.

Read the following topic thread, especially reply #2 for some important information.

You'll also want to read reply #2 on the following topic thread too. It will give you some very important information about debts for utility bills that may pass with the property and squatter's rights under the "Lei de Usucapião". It is quite possible, unfortunately, that unless you're very careful you could purchase a house that you can't occupy because you can't get rid of a squatter.
