Hi my name in Randy -
my wife, little girl (8y/0), and I will be traveling throughout ecuador next year for 3 weeks - we are looking at renting a car and going everywhere (beach, jungle and the highlands).  The CDC says there are chances of getting malaria when going to the beach and also the jungle on the eastern side.  Is this a problem?  Is renting a car a good idea to see as much as ecuador as possible?     Randy

Hello Randy:

There are endemic areas in Ecuador for Malaria. However, much of it depends exactly what areas you are going to. One caution is to be very careful about which medication you take. I have had trouble with an antimalarial called Larium before. I believe that Malarone may be available and will not have some of the same side effects as larium.

As to renting a car - I would highly recommend not to do this. It can become very expensive and if you have not had prior experience in Ecuador, it can be a real hassle. If

What I have done in the past is hire a driver which also takes some work but can be a good experience. You will have to pay his expenses also. However, if you are based in Quito this can be quite easy to do in day trips ect.

Thanks crowdpub-
it helps with the planning - we all are excited about going - it is going to be a vacation - but in the back of our head - maybe think about staying in a couple years.
thanks again - Randy56
