Hello there Expat.com!

My name is Justin and I'm an American living in Budapest.  Up until recently I was working on cruiseships as a drummer but I met my lovely Hungarian girlfriend on board and now I'm trying to live in Budapest with her.  Unfortunately jobs look scarce especially for Americans.  Does anyone have any advice?  I know a bit of Magyar (can understand a lot more then I can speak).

Thanks!

Hi,

I don't know too many people who make money from playing music in Hungary...
Any other skills, professions, experience?

Welcome to Expat.com, minquick :)
Depending on your qualifications (other than playing drums), you might want to have a look at the jobs section in Budabest Classifieds.
Good luck
Arlette

What about giving lessons to budding rock stars?

I do have a few years of teaching experience to youngsters.  Not just drums but guitar, bass, and piano too.  Are there any music schools around?

I was thinking of maybe transferring that experience to teaching English.  Are there any schools that don't require CETL or ESL certs?

Thanks for showing me the job section.  I'll def. keep an eye out.

Someone in these forums was looking for a bass guitar teacher. Do a search.

Update: It was here...

Teaching music could work. Being American adds extra credibility :-) As far as I can tell rock music teachers seem to advertise predominantly via flyer-sized posters on lamp posts...

There are plenty of language schools (nyelviskola in Hungarian), we even discussed a few here before, just search the forum.

Thanks I'll def search around and start planning some flyers.

but as is the case with any musicianing... One usually has to take up secondary menial jobs.  I'm not above pouring some coffee or washing some dishes if anyone hears of anything.

Didn't I read in this forum somewhere about some American speakers being needed for a movie?

Update:

Yes, I did but the opportunity is gone by now....

Incidentally, talking of movies, has anyone seen that enormous film studio they've built in Etyek, SE of Budapest (it's visible from quite a distance). It's called Korda Studios and the web site is here: http://www.kordastudio.hu/?scr=start,ld

Maybe they need session musicians.
