Top 5 tips to live in Haiti

Hi,

When you are going to live abroad, you may have a lot of questions. Hence to facilitate you in this process, we are inviting expats to share their top 5 tips with regards to settling and living in Haiti.

What recommendations would you give soon-to-be expats in Haiti?

How should they prepare efficiently for their expatriation project and settling in?

Please share with us your best advice for a successful expatriation in Haiti!

Thank you in advance :)

1) First of all, when you prepare to rent a house, know that landlords there expect you to pay all the rent up front for 6 months or for one year. A really good house that is furnished with electricity, furniture, a generator, hot water, and air conditioning can cost from $8,000.00 to $25,000 for the year.
2) Plan to eat food that is customary  to Haiti. For example, plan to eat beans, rice, chicken, and pasta rather than the foods associated with the culture of your home country. If you are an American, understand that American food cost significantly more than local Haitian food.
3) The climate in Haiti is normally hotter than America. So bring light cotton clothes, extra underwear, and a small hand towel to wipe your brow. You will need to purchase bottled water to keep yourself hydrated during your stay.
4) Bring mosquito repellent.
5) Don't take pictures of the local Haitian people. Haitians are beautiful people. Their culture is amazing! You may wish to take pictures, but always ask first. Most Haitians do not like to have their picture taken.

I pray that I will return to live in Haiti in the future.  HOWEVER, the high cost of housing (compared to other  nations in the Caribbean) could make that very difficult.
