JIS teachers face 15 years prison

http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2014 … years.html

"After more than three months in detention, Jakarta International School (JIS) teachers Neil Bantleman and Ferdinant Tjiong stood trial Tuesday at the South Jakarta District Court on charges of sexually abusing children.

Canadian Bantleman, 45, and Ferdinant, 42, were tried independently due to their separate dossiers. Furthermore, the trials were held behind closed doors due to the victims' ages......"

Just wonder why the trials were held behind close doors, any idea ?

Because the trial involves children and they need to be protectes from the press and the scrutiny of the media. It states that in the post. 'The victims ages' is a clue.

I'm worried about this one.
There seems to be no medical evidence, crap police work and the rapes were supposed to have taken place in a glass fronted office in schools hours.
If those are the facts, why are they bothering with the court?

Ah..... they want to sue the school for a few million dollars...but I'm sure thats a side issue.

PS.
anyonr know which court?

Few millions is good.....when I am not wrong they sue the school for 125 million dollars.

It is South Jakarta District court.

Movement.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will free two teachers who were jailed for sexually abusing students at an international school, the pair's lawyer said on Friday, in a case critics say was fraught with irregularities.

Canadian teacher Neil Bantleman and Indonesian teaching assistant Ferdinand Tjiong were found guilty in April of abusing kindergarten students at the Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS). They had been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 100 million rupiah ($7,600).

"The previous verdict has been overturned by the Jakarta high court because there was no evidence of sodomy," the pair's lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea told reporters at the court amid cheers from the teachers' families and supporters.

That's extremely worrying as this was known at the time of the first trial.
Many have suggested there was a financial reason behind this conviction and, whilst I accuse no one of anything, it's only fair this be investigated, just for the sake of the Indonesian legal system.

Good news indeed.

Nobody expected it I believe. But how about the local staff.....and the woman who created all?

If she is still around here, what's next?

The cleaners I am sure will be next. The mother is apparently back in Europe hiding and hopefully feeling ashamed.
Makes you wonder who was pulling the strings to get the teachers released.

Honestly......I am very surprised to read the news that they get released.

I did not expect it happening sometime soon but we are in Indonesia, and it's full with surprises.

She has a very large judgement against her in Singapore, and there really should be an investigation here that includes her.
If there is found to be any evidence to suggest she lied for financial gain, she should be named as a suspect and an international arrest warrant issued.

The chaps who have spent time in prison should now receive serious compensation.
Clearing their names is one thing, but the last year or so must have been hell for them.

Currently in Netherlands, she commented on court decision.

Will she ever come back here?

As you said Fred, if there is found to be any evidence to suggest she lied for financial gain, she should be named as a suspect and an international arrest warrant issued.

Just read your link, and she's still claiming there was abuse, even though there seems to be absolutely no medical evidence to prove it.
I'm no doctor, but I suspect a man sodomising a 6 year old kid would rip his anus to bits, leaving obvious injuries, and lots of blood - However, none of this seems to have been part of the trial, suggesting the possibility the woman lied.

Perhaps she should return to Indonesia and speak out again, re-accusing the teachers - I dare her to.

Wasn't there another woman claiming also that her child was raped?

We don't know anything for sure, except what we read on the news. The news can be wrong and misleading so why are we criminalising the mother now? Is it a fact that she is in hiding in Netherlands or just gossiping? What about the evidence of sodomy? Do we know something that the police and doctors do not know?

What evidence of sodomy?
Can you link to any and, if so, was it presented at the trial?

Did anyone find the magic stone? That would clearly be terrific both to convict these men, and as a major breakthrough in the treatment of injuries, not to mention pain relief.

As for the bricked up secret rooms in JIS - Did anyone ever find any?

So sorry Mr. Fred, I do not mean to make you angry.

I mean that when this problems happened at JIS then everyone here was against those teachers, but now we seem to be supporting them and against the mother of the child. I just feel that our opinions change depending on what we read on the news. Of course I respect your expertise in this matter and I admit I do not have so much knowledge about the case as others here in this forum.

Not angry at all.

I've been following this story since it broke, and never been even slightly happy with the evidence.
Really, magic stones that took away pain and healed injuries, secret rooms no one could find, and sexual assaults in a glass fronted office open to public view, but moved to secret rooms when someone realised there is no way rapes could have been carried out there.

If Snape had been giving Harry potter what for in a secret room, it might have been workable in the pornographic extravaganza, Harry Potter and the big snake, but in a large Jakarta school - I'm less than convinced.

Still, Mummy can always pop back to Jakarta and repeat her allegations on Indonesian TV, but I'll bet she doesn't.
If I were these teachers, I'd be going for a defamation case in Indonesia, and waiting to see if the mothers pop over to prove their allegations.
I wonder if she'll ever go to Singapore and face their courts - ner, can't see it.
She owed them S$230,000 in damages payments for defamation - I wonder if she ever paid up.

In other news, I understand defamation is a criminal act in the Netherlands, and she's repeated her accusations there. That could be a problem for her if she can't prove it.

Added - The mother, Purti, is threatening to give up her Indonesian citizenship (if the press reports are accurate).
To do that, she'd need to get a passport for another country.

One wonders if it's out of anger, or fear of any future court action.

As a note to the unfamiliar, Indonesia doesn't allow dual nationality, so she'd have to renew her passport in five years or less, and that could be difficult if there was an outstanding case or conviction against her.

In my opinion, this woman should return to Indonesia and take out a private action for damages against the school and the teachers. Of course, she'd be in a lot of trouble if she couldn't produce any evidence, but I'm sure she'll come over and do it.

Reading today's article for the police it is not over/final yet.

Just wonder what the Canadian teacher is going to do next. Staying here or taking the next flight out if he is allowed to?

I am sure the police will defend their actions but I can't see it going back to trial due to the amount of pressure applied by persons unknown. Everyone needs to move on from this and hopefully the law can be revised to prevent another circus from cropping up again .

Hi Luke!  How's that "bambino" doing?  That's one heck of a cute little boy.  I'll bet that you, just like me, thanks God that our kids got their looks from their mom, eh?  :top:

Back when this JIS mess hit the fan, you as a professional and experienced foreign teacher in Indonesia talked about certain pressures being placed on foreign teachers, and long delays in visa and work permit renewals.

Has that lighten up somewhat...or still sama, sama?

Hi Roy, Jeremy is 2 years and 3 months and is just a complete handful. He does not look like a 2 year old and certainly has more developed skills than many children I see. He is fully trained in the use of my Tab and seems to have learnt how to delete email from it. He knows countless words and can sing almost by heart 3 songs and all the dance moves to the wheels on the bus. Its a life changer.

The story with the legalities for teachers with work permits still exists. 6 month Kitas regardless of whether the person has all the current requirements or not. Private language teachers come under a different part of the education system so the rules are more stringent than high schools (in Jakarta so I am told).

The visa thing still is not any easier for other expats. If consultants come here now to work with businesses they need a business visa and then supporting documents if they are planning to work outside the office as well as the entry visa. This applies to 1 day visitors as well. If on a multiple entry visa it is easier, however the paperwork that needs to be submitted is huge.

The prosecutors filed an appeal in the supreme court 2 weeks ago, so the story is not over yet....

I understand a new witness has come forward.
The man, Rumpelstiltskin, has absolute evidence of their guilt.
