Can you export a car without a work permit?

Hi everybody,

We just moved to DES and realized very quickly how much you spend if you live in DES and do not have a car.

Can you please let me know whether you need a work permit to export a car w/out a work permit?

Also if you have any recommendation / experience you would like to share for exporting a car, I would love to hear it.

Hi,

I assume you meant 'importing a car into DES' instead of 'export a car'. You don't require a work permit, per se, to import a car. Work permit merely gives you the legal right to work in Tanzania for a specific employer. If you are a foreigner, you will require to prove that you are legally resident in Tanzania - by way of the Visa that you hold- depending on whether you are an employee, an investor, or a spouse/child.

The key issue is that you will require to obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN) before you can get the car registered in your name. This means that you have to be legally resident in Tanzania to obtain the TIN.
