Veterinary oppertunities

Hi there

Doing some research with regard to veterinary opportunities in Vietnam. Specifically in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Is there general vet pracrises there? Is ther a pet culture there at all? I must admit am clueless about this.
I am sure expats have pets where ever they go. Does anyone maybe have any contact details of local vet practises?

And welfare or shelters. I have only seen a few opportunities for shelter medicine across that whole peninsula. Are SPCA or PDSA or IFAW there?

I would appreciate any info or insight into this topic.
Thanks

Hello grgbirch

Kindly note that your thread has been moved to Vietnam Forum so as to help you get better interactions.

Thanks.

There are plenty of Vets in Vietnam. Especially in Saigon and Hanoi, also in other areas. Common problems for expats seems more the language as well the common appearance of "clinics" or a mobile Vet.
Most the so called expats seem to be anyway in best case "longer time" tourists and don't have a pet.

I am living in NT and out Vet by chance speak a quite good English , loves dogs (not only as for business) and over the past seven years he had at least 3 future Vets accompanying him more or less frequently.
As Vietnam is pretty much the same as for the cities, so it might be also Hanoi and Saigon something going.

Challenges I only can see/imagine, when thinking about paper work (acceptance of qualifications) and a quite limited clientele, if you not speak Vietnamese.

Thanx I3ully
Are you aware of any shelters around the busy cities that work with stray animals? I am looking to possibly do some work maybe volunteer some professional time.

Also if you are comfortable would it be at all possible if I could get a mail adress for your vet to ask advice? If you are not keen thats totally fine.

I am living a bit away from Saigon, so you  have to find out yourself or wait for a response from a local.

Nope, not have any email. He comes automatically if one of the dogs is due for vaccination and other appointments, I just call him in and depending on urgency and his schedule, it s maybe 20 mins or 4-5 days, before he turns up

Hi,

It seems I know someone doing this job. You want to volunteer for caring animals?

Dejavu.dot Hi there
Actually looking for work as veterinarian in general practice or shelter work. So just trying to find some veterinary facilities where I can contact other vets or managers.

I think you can apply for an internship in those places. I remember there is a hotel for pets in hcm

There are more (pet) vets in the south than in the north.

In the North they EAT dogs (and cats). In fact there is a small village enclave in Metro Ha Noi that specialises in dog meat. And cats get exported to China.

Westerners are, as usual, into pets, and, interestingly, so are the Vietnamese. The condominium where my office is in TP HCM (SaiGon) has many domestic pets, generally they seem well cared for.

There is one Vietnamese Veterinarian Surgeon in TP HCM who was trained, and practiced for several years, in the UK.

You should not be surprised there are not too many Vets over here, often, in the rural countryside, they use barely trained paramedics for HUMANS, so you wouldn't expect Vets!

Presently you will find 'Vets', in the accepted Western meaning of the word in Ho Chi Minh, Nha Trang, Da Nang and Ha Noi (at least) and there is a 'Vet' who is specifically employed to tend to chickens and cows/bulls imported (live) from Australia. KFC has it's own dedicated source and the imported herds were introduced as a government attempt to stir up the blood-line in the bovine industry.

If you search Google, AS WELL AS OTHER SEARCH ENTITIES, you will find the listings for Veterinary Surgeons in VN. Note you will have to register with the Ministry of Health to get the authority to prescribe drugs.

There are many pet stores in the country, and all need medical support for their customers.

Unfortunately the 'puppy dog' mills are of full operation here, centred on Le Hong Fong Street in HCM, and their sickly progeny can be seen all over VN.

We have all the usual pet diseases, rabies is rampant amongst dogs.

I have heard about those dog sellers. Seems they inject a kind of medicines for all dogs there but those dogs usually die after some days being bought

Most 'stray' animals are rendered into soap, or other things.

The Peoples Committee occasionally sends squads when complaints get high in any area.

There are no animal pounds or similar. There are humane attempts at adoption by private organisations or people.
