The answer to your problem is quite simple...



Participation means posting something that has substance, is meaningful... so don't think that just a post that says "Hi" or "how are you?" or just posting a smiley is going to work, it won't.

The way that we all (as members) get to know each other is through posting to the forums, that's the whole idea of the blog.... SHARING.

Why would you want to send me a private message, or why would I want to even read it, if we don't first know each other? Why would either of us want our private mailboxes filled with unsolicited messages or worse still copy & paste spam from people we don't know, about things we have absolutely no interest in???

This is exactly why Expat-blog has the Automated Anti-Spam System that requires members participate in the forums by posting before their private message privileges are activated.
