Need advice from computer tech about Internet on Nexus 7 Tablet

Retired in Cambodia and would love to communicate with family at home without going to the Internet.  First off I am of the older generation with more than enough lack of understanding of computer technology so if my ignorance is obvious please forgive me.
I have a 2012 Nexus 7 Tablet which has a micro USD port (for the charger).  I bought an adaptor to convert it to USB 2.0 with the intention of using an Internet Sim card from the phone company in their USB thumb drive.  I assumed that the tablet would behave like a regular tower computer and immediately recognize the new drive, give me a screen display icon for the new drive and allow me to click on it but I get nothing.
Am I expecting something from the tablet it cannot perform or is there something else I need to do?

Thanks to anyone who can offer assistance.
