Can I get SA citizenship as a British man?

Hi,

Kind of a not so straight forward situation.

I'm British, born and bred in the UK with UK passport. My Fathers fully brit too. However, my mother was born in the UK to South African parents. She has now acquired SA citizenship through her parents.

Basically, am I eligible? And even more helpful - does anyone know of what sort of documentation I would need to apply at the High commission? I have done hours of research but it's still fully unclear.

Thanks
Matt

I would discuss the issue with an immigration attorney or the South African embassy in London.  Having a foreign born mother who gained citizenship through her mother is not the easiest way to gain citizenship yourself.

We are immigration attorneys/lawyers.

It is actually quite simple. You can immediately apply for Permanent Residency through your mother. After 5 years of successfully holding a Permanent Resident Permit (which includes living in SA for some time), you can apply for Citizenship.

Hope this helps.
