Moving to Saigon in August

Hi

Im moving to Saigon from London in August and just wanted to check a few things.  Firstly my doctor is being very indecisive over whether or not I need to have a Japanese Encephalitis injection, can anyone tell me whether or not I should get it.  I don't want to have it if I don't need to as its very expensive.

Also I am beginning to think about things that I might need to pack that I wont be able to get over there, is there anything that you think is a must for me to bring?

Cheers
Vikki

hi Vikki,
I love to hear about that:D.
I have a lots of things that I want to share:D. BUt if u intend to stay here long time, u need to bring medicine from ur country(medicine in vietnam too much expensive and it sometimes not as good as it has to be), dont pack too much clothes because they r cheap and various here:D.
Did u find out any room or apartment to rent? I can help you:d
When u come here, call me, I'll take u some interesting places in HCMC and enjoy our traditional food:d. my email is [email protected]
hope to see u soon in vietnam

Dear Vikki

It's not necessary to have Japanese Encephalitis injection as you are going to stay in Saigon, not rural area so dont worry about that. If u need, Japanese Encephalitis injection is cheaper in vietnam. Many foreigners i know they dont have Japanese Encephalitis injection and they r fine. You also dont need to bring too many medicines as there are plenty here and good quality as u can get varies medicine made in vietnam or exported from others countries. You can get medicine very easy at pharmacy here except some specialised medicine which is available in the hospital only. The price is not expensive. My husband is Australian and we know the price of medicine here is much cheaper than medicine in Sydney.

Clothes is cheap in vietnam except famous international brands, more expensive than in your country. You should bring your shoes as shoes in your country is much better quality, various styles. I think in London u use 3 pronged outlets, we use 2 pronged outlets in Vietnnam, so bring power adapter for your convenient (you can buy power adapter here too)

Anyway, you can find mostly everything u need in Vietnam. For sure, u can make a check list, we'll know what we dont have here.

All the best
Thu

no need for Japanese Encephalitis injection.

international medicine is available and much cheaper here than in europe.

bring some good pairs of shoes and a good raincoat. a few delicacies from your country, preferably canned, will be highly valued after some time here.

otherwise you can buy everything here.

Hi,
If you're living in HCM city, you don't need the injection, we've lived here since 2003, and each year, for my kids and me, the doctor says no for the injection :-) So don't woory about that.

I think mostly you can find everything here , but prepare summer clothes as this is tropical country . If you move to Ho Chi Minh city , then find a house or an apartment which costs about some hundred dollars to over a thounsand dollars with really good facilities , and distric 7 , 2 and 1 are the best , but foreigners love district 7 most as I know . Learn to drive a motorbike really well as you will have to use it here , and traffic in VN are crazy and scary to you for sure , and if you want to know more about the city , contact me  ^^ I'm an international school student since highschool and gonna be college freshman in a few months , what school are you teaching here ?

as everyone's already said, no need for the injection :)

stuff to bring: as a pharmacy is sometimes hard to find, medicines (especially anything u take regularly) will be useful. supermarkets etc do not have a pharmacy section.

some food stuff u probably find easily in supermarkets over there might not be available over here, another thing i found surprising. but in general, most other stuff is easily available, and generally much cheaper than anywhere else :D

im sure ur aware of the weather here, and like others have said, clothing is cheap. and even major labels are around the same price that i found when i was living in singapore, or slightly cheaper even.

btw, are u gonna be working at the internation school saigon pearl? just wondering, coz ur starting in august and that opens in august, i live at saigon pearl, just opposite the school. it'd be a good place to live :P well, cheers n good luck

Hi,
Don`t worry about injection here, but the factor you need to interested in that "don`t buy the food on the street" cause it not so clean, the medicine in VN is cheap not so expensive if you need to buy any medicines..maybe you need to write its name and show the doctor cause VNmese not fluently English...some tips hope they will be helpful for you here.
I had the short work time in London and see your nation is very beautiful...

hey

I'm living in saigon since 1 year and a half and never heard about anyone who had the encephalite.

I personaly did the vaccination before coming because i didn't know but I don't realy think it is necessary but do as you wish i'll not be responsible if you get it...

Enjoy Saigon

One thing I have to add....I've been in HCMC for over a year and have been to Vietnam many times and I am not considered FAT in the USA as I am a size 12 or L.  However, it is very difficult to find clothing here that fits and I always have to import my under clothes.  SO if you are a larger woman than I suggest PACKING THE CLOTHES and SHOES!  :)
