New to forum ...any advice gratefully received

We are getting married in August 2010 and planning to move to Enugu within the year.  My hubby is mixed race British and Naija so we are all set up with accommodation in family compound which is guarded.

What opportunities are there for a white Naija wife in Anamabra State? What about the safety issues....a tad worried as i'll be travelling on a Naija passport so have right to live and work out there without a visa but this has draw backs as whilst I have British passport i will be there as a native.

Any advice welcome.

One error in your post is Enugu is not in Anambra State. Enugu is a state on its own. I don't know maybe this an error or you meant to live in Anambra and work in Enugu.

However, many opportunities abound in Anambra and surrounding states for a white Naija wife. It all depends of your qualification and well you're able to integrate with the locals. I say 'integrate' because it plays a major role between being seen as 'one of them and being seen as an expatriate. That's also crucial security-wise.

It's a good thing you have naija passport. It ensures that you're not hindered both in movement and job-hunting. But I would keep my British passport as well. It helps you to get assistance from the British High Commission, if needed.

Seek help from the high commission as soon as you arrive Nigeria.

Thank you Christal.  The family have properties in both Enugu and also Nteje which is Anamabra so we have the choice of where we live although Enugu is favoured place for us.

I intend to keep my UK passport. Hubby has both passports and advised that it's easier travelling out to Naija on a Naija passport and then travel back to UK on UK passport...less complications.

At the moment I am working for Health Service in UK as an Admin Manager so hopeful i'll be able to use these skills out in Naija, particularly as I work for Woman & Child Services which includes experience in Public Health with regard to Immunisations and Child Protection, although this seems to be a challenge in Naija.

Been listening to Naija radio for a while now to get a feel for what is going on out there at a local level but appreciate that this may be filtered to some extent.

Thanks for the info about integration. I tend to be a bit of a chameleon so hopeful this will put me in good stead in this regard.  I've been learning the local Igbo and whilst I realise that they speak English in the main I think it does help to at least try to speak in the native tongue, even if it's badly. I've been reassured by Hubby that I won't be subject to kidnapping as i'll be protected with family links but i'm still a bit dubious on this front.  Although Mum has also reassured me and she has been loads of times (she is white). Thankfully i've already met a large portion of the family and others over there as most are toing and froing quite a bit so i'm also hopeful this also will ease my transition a tad.

I'm not sure what to expect but then I don't think you can be fully prepared.

We are travelling to Naija next year so that I can have a 'taste' before we finally take the plunge and I am going with Hubby and his father is escorting us for a while but in some ways i'm not too clear how this will affect people's reactions towards me or not - positive or negative.  I tend to like to be judged on my own merit too but as i will bear a local family name I suspect this is perhaps too much to expect.

I wish I could go with you!

Change of plans and rather than having a taster we are preparing to set off in November and take the slow route overland via West Coast.  Hubby and I hopefully will arrive in Nigeria sometime in February 2012.

So any advice will be gratefully received!

Mrs S comes from Enugu and we travel there to visit in the in-laws.

It's a sleepy, dusty city of around 2 million people, with very little in the way of larger industries and has little infrastructure. There is a Mercedes assembly plant close to the airport, a Guinness plant over at 9th Mile about 30mins out of the city....and that's about it!
