For various reasons I was browsing the Libyan Embassy website, it's a revelation!
"Nightlife in Libya:
All over Libya, you will find so many things to do, see and experience, you may not have enough time to do everything. Libya is full of interesting places, where one can easily pass many hours enjoying the entertainment that can be found in Libya.
The are also a wide range of bars, cafes and clubs all over Libya. Tripoli and tourist resorts in Libya hava some of the most popular clubs in the country. Whatever type of bar or club you are looking for, you will find it in Libya."
In one of the accompanying boxes there's a link to Irish Pubs in Libya, amongst other things.
But before you start planning your St Patrick's Day celebrations, clicking on the link will dampen your party spirits.
I think the IT guys in the Embassy, copied another country's website - either because of the lack English language or they do no't know what to type.
I am a Libyan and the boredom is killing me. we just escape to Djerba for the weekend.

what's wrong with celebrating St.Patrick's in Green Square like every year ?!?
that's why it's green in the first place...
and what a taste those mirthful spirits at the embassy have. Jazz clubs? lol.. they even make a distinction between bars, clubs and cafes.
Edit: here is the link

Sorry to wazz on your fireworks guys, but that's not the Libyan embassy official site.
Go to the official site of the Libyan embassy in London, and then check out the party culture. It's such a w@nk, inconspicious and valueless waste of cyberspace it doesn't even register on Google unless you wade through many pages of similar dirge.

If you look on the first page you see a huge club, with people with their hands in the air enjoying themselves, bit of a give away I think
Here you go.
Note the veritable cornucopia of mirth and merriment....

Is that the Aussie team coach?

It's like calling the new paint on your Honda "Ferrari Red"--a bit aspirational.
Their official site home page is even more encouraging.

Don't worry, the fact that someone has bothered to set up an 'Unofficial' Libyan Embassy site and filled it with crap, pours petrol on my comedy bonfire
tripoli is full of night life (which doesn't involve alchohol)
theres lots of nice cafe shops , site seeing and sports .
try to go to ALMADENA AL QADIMA at night theres a nice cafe called CASA CAFE
To quote someone I admire greatly:
"Why the **** am I going to drive 30 mins to drink a coffee when I've got a Gaggia sitting in my kitchen ?"
janzour is a bit dead at night try to go out in city center just to enjoy the views or walking by the beach , its not a matter of drinking coffee

Without wanting to sound rude my friend, I think you are missing the pint err I mean point
metalsaif wrote:how long have u been in libya ??
Who was that addressed to, me or Mudman, if it is me 6 months. And I think I have seen all I really need to see in Tripoli. Plenty to still see out with the city though, mountains and lakes (oasis) being the top of my wish list. I forgot to add, some of us are lucky enough to come from a country that is truly beautiful, and that also has cities with incredible architecture (although I ignored it whilst I was there), so Tripoli (nice though it is)isn't really picturesque or of any great historical interest, compared to Rome, Paris, Milan, Aberdeen (blown it now eh !!?)

Quality!
Would those be the rose-tinted views which seem to be so common among the local population?
sure its not that historical city as Rome ,,, but i think u shud visit Lipts Magnet , suprata , shahat , and Gaber aon down near Sabha.

This isn't the pint I mean point of the thread, but Clansman, the lakes down the South are awesome, been there twice since arriving six months ago.
Ghadames is definitely worth a visit (though the flight schedules make it harder than it should be).
Gharyan (which is a short but as always perilous drive from Tropli) has some of trogdolyte houses and is a decent visit for a friday. Though you can spend a night in one of the trogdolyte house with dinner and breakfast included (if you want to do something different).
The Qsars in the Nafusa mountains are also worth a visit, especially the one in Nalut.
There's I've done my bit for Libya's tourism industry.

Cheers Tony, my wife and I really want to visit the lakes, I think the prices start at 550LYD for two days including flights. Sabratha was nice, I have heard about Gharyan from a friend of mine who has been there, he loved it. We have no car so it would be a taxi job for me, but that is not a problem.

Thank you, I am sure I will, I am flying out to the desert next week for 3 days (work unfortunately) but I am sure that will be an experience as well.

There is no nightlife in Libya!!
in fact, there is no social life. Except going out to have a bite or have a coffee, going to the beach for foreigners and driving to Leptis Magna and Sabratha, there is nothing to do here. Too bad, Libya has potential.
I heard that alcohol could be introduced into Libya as of next year. Only foreigners will be able to consume it. Just like in Oman and Qatar. Anyway, by next year I am out of here.
I would be interested to hear where you heard that, their have been several mentions of some of the higher class hotels being given licences to sell alcohol (only to foreigners right enough), I haven't heard it would be as early as 2011 though. Here's hoping
No chance, we've heard this rumour every year. Never likely to happen.
I tried to find something more about that. It looks like Saif al-Islam said sth about changing prohibition laws in an interview to Sunday Times a month ago. Probably he was testing the response in Libya. It wasnt very promising. Some critical voices you can find here: http://www.libyaalmostakbal.net/news/clicked/2786. Google translator will do just fine.
Anyway, the fact that they put this news on national tv is promising. It means that they are testing public opinion not only from UK but also from here. They will push harder and harderd on hardliners. Liquor licenses are like miliking cows. Some guys, starting from the top, will make a lot of money out of them.
