Schools near Bangsar /Ampang

Hi.
We are moving to Kuala Lumpur in August and IŽm looking for a school for my two kids age 4 and 8. IŽm looking for schools near Bangsar or Ampang, near the city center not very far like Desa Park or Montkiara.
Can anyone help me telling me names of schools. We are going to travel to Kuala Lumpur in March to check out some of them so I need to have a plan and know which schools I should visit!
Thank you
Marta

These are the well-known international schools and the website describes each school, its fees, and curriculum:

You will need to first check if there is a waiting list for the classes you need.

Thank you for the information. ItŽs just that most of them are pretty far for the city center. I was hoping to find a school that wouldŽt be to far.

Every school is in one of the areas you mentioned. No schools in Bangsar. You can live close to any of them quite easily, except probably Alice Smith is a bit isolated.

Desa park and Mont kiara are suburbs with their own schools

Hi Marta,

Where do you plan to live in KL?  Have you decided?  I think after you have decided then only you look for the school.

The closest school to the city centre (not sure where you think the centre of KL lies) is probably Alice Smith. i.e. it is about 2 km by road from the twin towers.

The majority of people live either in Mont Kiara as there are two schools there.  Or they live In Ampang and use the international school there.  There are schools near KLCC, but they are not the first choice of expats.  Also KLCC is not particularly child and family friendly. It is more for singles and city workers, as there are not many facilities suitable for children.

One of the main issues will be waiting lists and you would need to check out several schools by email to see if there are spaces in the classes you need.

Eaton House is the closest school to the centre of KL - it is walking distance from the twin towers and park area. It was included in the list above.

hi
Thanks for all your replys.
We know a couple living in KL and they told us we should live in Amapang or Bangsar, so we will probably focuse there.
My husband will be traveling to KL next week to visit schools and we will decide from there were we want to live.
He will visit all the schools you said I think.
If you have any other advise on schools please tell me

Hi
sorry, but which is the school closest to Ampang that you mention?
Marta

Just one more question. Is Selangor very far from KL? I see there are some schools that look pretty good like the Australian Int School.
Marta

Selangor is a state in Malaysia. In fact Ampang is in Selangor. KLCC is in another state and the area just around it is like an island in the middle of Selangor.  Selangor is a huge state which reaches from about 40km north of KLCC down to the airport KLIA area, about 60km south of KLCC.  There are no international schools in Bangsar as mentioned, although I think there are school buses that pick up from that area.

The Australian School is in Seri Kembangan and therefore many Australians live close by to it - the rents are quite high as it is mostly houses they occupy. There is no public transport (i.e. train) linking that area to KLCC or anywhere so having a car or two is a must. Driving is a nightmare and could take 2 hours each morning and evening. There are a couple of Malls within about 20 mins - The Pyramid and The Mines.

If your child does not speak and write English, you will need to enrol him in a language course at the school before he can be accepted into the classroom. This needs to be checked with schools and also if there are waiting lists i.e. there is no room for your child.

There are international schools all around the Klang Valley, including Nexus and UCSI.

You should work out how your husband is going to get to work and then choose a school that is also convenient to both home and his office.  KL covers a large area but also has lots of suburbs. Bangsar and Ampang are suburbs. Check out if you can afford to rent property in either area. They can both be rather expensive for the size of accommodation you require.  Just go to www.iproperty.my and search on your budget and an area. You can also search on Schools on Google maps

ok. Thanks. That doesnŽt sound  very appealing. I think we wont visit the school. We really werenŽt planning on using a car in KL and we donŽt want to be so isolated....we were planning on using public transport so we need to live somewhere where we can easily use it.
If you know any nice schools near Ampang, besides the ones you already told us, please keep me informed.
WE will visit Mont Kiara and Desa Park as well though.
Thanks
Marta

You will need a car, even if you live in some parts of Bangsar or in Ampang. There are no stations near to any available schools. Foreigners can only attend private or international schools.

You could live in KLCC/Bukit Bintang and send your kids to this school and not need a car:

In Etonhouse, teachers apply their teaching methods based on their observation of the kid's behaviour, making a structured plan for every single child.

They don't use worksheets or employ paper exams as their assessment strategy. Instead, they emphasise on improving student EQ. They believe that such an approach enables kids to learn 21st century skills such as teamwork, communication, social skills, and critical thinking faster than usual.

Etonhouse is located very close to KLCC in a very green environment. Children studying there benefit from a low student-teacher ratio. Number of students per class in nursery is 4 to 6, and in kindergarten it rises to a maximum of 10. In primary level this number is not more than 15.

Security level is high in the school. Currently, the school does not offer secondary education.

This school is suitable for parents who want their kids to explore life, have a structured mind, think outside the box and pursue their passion.

thanks for your help. I am also going to visit eton house.

hi Marta
I moved my son from Alice Smith to ISKL (Ampang) a year and a half ago. Alice Smith was good, he had 5 good years there in Elementary school; the senior campus is a LONG drive out from KL; not an option for my family. I would describe ISKL as the most brilliant, fun, high standards, friendly, non-clique-oriented school I could imagine. Some international schools have a culture that is predominately country-X. You choose if that is a good or not-so-good thing from your perspective. ISKL seems to be as close to balanced as possible between its composite countries' cultures. The final exams are International Baccalaureate (1st school in KL area to operate IB) - so there is global recognition - which appeals to my family very much.   There are excellent Spanish teachers there - so you can continue that for your kids if you wish.
As far as I am aware, there are 5 internationally accredited schools in KL area, and many other international schools that are not internationally accredited.
Good Luck! (KL is a great place to live).

Thanks, I will look at the web page since we are interested in finding a job in KL:.
As for the reply from DAVIDinKL thank you for your information. We did like the ISKL very much, at least from what we saw on their web page. The problem is the very high registration fee you have to pay, and we might only be staying in KL for a year, so the registration fee is to much. Nevertheless I thilnk we will visit it, even if its just to see what we are missing.
Thanks again for the info.
Marta

If you are just in Malaysia on an extended holiday, remember that you have no immigration status here other than as a tourist, and would probably not be able to enrol your children in a school.  In that case, home schooling for a year is probably the only option.

Global Indian International School is quite close to Bangsar...and has a bus transport available. You may want to check with them.

Thanks.

hello
Thank you for all your help.
My husband has just come back from KL and he says, considering the first year we would probably like to live near the center, that he liked Eton House. He said the best, for him, was AIS, but its not very near the center and its more expensive, so we will probably go for Eton House.
Do any of you have any experience with this school?
REgards
Marta

No sorry I don't have any experience with that school.
