Running excursions in Croatia.

I live in Croatia, have a tourism company that is entitled to offer excursions to tourists but want to know is there anything to stop me organizing tours? I want to be able to take people to attractions simply as their escort with out passing myself off as a professional tour guide. Only small groups of up to 12 people.
From what I have read so far there are no restrictions but I want to know for sure before I start. Obviously foreign companies organize excursions with their guides that are not based in Croatia so is it all ok for me? I also know of many locals that run excursions who are not registered tour guides or have tourist agencies.
I hope someone who has 1st hand experience can help.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

I'm not an expert by any means, but I do know if you are running excursions with a bus or car there are certain permits you have to get. I assume you are already a registered tourist agency? With that if you are running guided tours of anywhere you have to have a registered tourist guide who has proven knowledge of the site. So I am guessing some exam is involved or something similar.

You can find all the "Laws" here zakon.hr/ . Best of luck :)

Many thanks for that. That was what I thought but as far as I can see looking through the laws is that you only need to be a registered guide for tours of 15 people or more. I think this may be true as I know of several people that offer small tours that are definitely not registered tourist guides but seem to go about there business legitimately.
It is very confusing trying to find out what is right and wrong.

Croatian rules, confusing? Sorry, I can't help you, only empathize with your frustration. It's even more confusing when locals themselves just go ahead and operate "in the black"

It's confusing because the person or people who should know because it is their job to know actually don't know anything or are just not bothered to go find out for you. It's a never ending circle of forwarded emails and phone numbers!

It doesn't help either when there are so many intertwined laws that may or may not apply to your business. You are almost better off to go open your business and wait until you get fined for breaking one of these laws! :) I really think a lot of it is made up on the spot!
