Hi, I'm Louise - and I just this minute joined up. I'm a British woman living in a medieval village overlooking Italy's beautiful Lago Maggiore, not far from the Swiss border. My German husband and I have been here a few years now and our ancient stone house, renovated from top to bottom, is about coming together. My blog is a mix of information, cautionary tales for would-be renovators, observations on life with two trilingual children under 4 and what it's like to inhabit an almost-abandoned village half way up a mountain with a tribe of feral cats, a gaggle of Piemontese chickens and no vehicle access. Oh, and things I find funny ha-ha and funny peculiar about living in Italy. Please drop by one of these days. You might enjoy the View from Carmine Superiore. www.carminesuperiore.blogspot.com

Hi Julien

Why I moved here is a long, long story. Here's a cut down version without the naughty bits. Unlike many expats, I  guess, it wasn't a matter of moving because of my job. A German friend of mine brought me to this village a couple of months after my marriage split up.  He knew it from childhood holidays here and he'd spent a formative summer here just after qualifying. He in fact rented the house we now own (minus roof and various other important bits). I instantly fell in love with the place, and a string of major coincidences led us to be in the right place at the right time to buy the house - it never came onto the market. The plan was to have it as a holiday home - my partner (as he was by then) was at the time in the US and I was in London. Somewhere to meet that could be ours together without encroaching on the other person's life. He later got a job in Milan and started living here full time. He seemed to be having such a great time that about a year later I rented out my London house, quit my job and joined him...then came the builders, the plumbers, the roofers, the painters, the babies, the chickens, the cats, the seagull...

Thanks for the advice on the photos. I will indeed try to add more.

Louise
