Where could I buy "tahini" or "sesame seed paste" in Rio?

Where could I buy "tahini" or "sesame seed paste" in Rio? Does it exist here? Seems like it's not really popular!

Thanks

Your pesonal guru at your service.... hahahaha

Going to make Hummus, are we?

If they have the Pão de Açúcar supermarket chain in Rio you will find Tahini there in their specialty foods section. Hold onto your hat as you approach the aisle, you'll be shocked at the price! Do you have something you can mortgage BTW????

If you can't find a Pão de Açúcar, then I'd suggest that you ask around to find the part of Rio that has any Arab or Greek restaurants. You'll probably be able to find a shop nearby that sells it. Perhaps one of the restaurants can point you in the right direction.

If all else fails you can probably find Sesame seeds at the Central Market, so you can make your own. It's rather easy and probably better than what you'll buy.

4 cups sesame seeds
1/4-1/2 cup vegetable oil
Directions:

1
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2
Spread the sesame seeds on a shallow baking tray and bake, shaking frequently, until fragrant, 8 to 10 minutes.
3
Do not brown.
4
Cool.
5
Put the sesame seeds in a blender or food processor fitted with the metal blade.
6
Add the vegetable oil.
7
Process to a smooth paste, about 5 minutes.
8
Add more oil if necessary, to bring the paste to a thick pouring consistency.
9
Tahini will keep stored in a tightly covered jar in the refrigerator for several months.

lol! indeed i'm going to engage you as my personal guru on supermarket shopping in brazil! thanks! i have a feeling i'm going to annoy my hubby with some liquificador noises tonight.

ABS

likewise would be helpful if anyone knew where to get teriyaki sauce

Hi Joe,

Should be able to find that at Pão de Açúcar too or maybe even at Extra. I think you are going to have less trouble laying your hands on Teriyaki Sauce than Tahini, that's for sure.

Tahini (sesame seed paste) and many other ethnic specialty products can also be found at the Extra supermarket chain. Look in their specialty food aisle. Be prepared to experience "sticker shock", the last time I bought Tahini in São Paulo, it was ridiculously expensive.
