Is there a reciprocal agreement with health care in Malta and the NHS in England? I am moving to Malta as a retired person and have paid NI in the UK all my working life. Am getting conflicting reports on the health care availability that I can expect in Malta.

if you are retired and in receipt of state pension then you will be entitled to get full healthcare here foc. If you are retired and not in receipt of state pension then you can get the lesser healthcare cover (Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement) RHA card, this is lesser cover but is adequate to get the residency permit. it is renewable every two years.

Applied for Economic Self-Sufficiency last week and I can assure you the RHA card,(Reciprocal HealthCare Agreement) will be sufficient - Just go to the Entletment Unit in the morning with your passport and everything will be done in 15 minutes - They will give you a temporary certificate (Covering 1 year) and present it with your application.

No need to go through hoops.....

Could you please give me a from/too quote on a 'Private Hospital Plan' with BUPA for Malta that qualifies the holder to apply for residency for someone under and also for someone over 60 years of age. Just the coverage for Malta - nothing else!

This is so we can put your quotes into general context as you are obviously a commercial poster.

I am not a commercial poster and as you can see I have been on this forum since the beginning of the year and have been contributing to it in different topics as much as I could even with my tiny experience of Malta and asking questions myself. I have been working in Insurance in Ireland since 2005 till the time we moved to Malta just in June this year. I suppose one of the reasons I got the job with the Company was the experience.

This was only a suggestion, as this was my way to try and help people the best way I could. People, who helped us so much before our move.

If you want to give individual private advice you are wrong to post on our forum. Everybody here is interested in your public information and not only to private messages and e-mails.


If you read your own post you will understand my suspicion in your objectives , all the more so that you are avoiding any kind of direct quote.

Please prove me wrong and post examples here so that our members can compare.

As you can appreciate Ricky I don't have the rates with me so I did not avoid the question, just didnt have the answer for it. The age brackets are very different , but I suppose I can give you the idea of the rates from & to. I'll get back to you tomorrow with some figures, they wont be exact by any means just an idea I suppose. Unfortunatelly it is quite individual..

As promised - some figures

For the most comprehensive private hospital plan for Malta only the prices would range from €193.80 to €1,126.25 for ages 0 to 59. For ages 60 + it is from €1,263.95 to €2,590.80. No deductibles (adding one would reduce the price and there are number of options to choose from).

There is another private hospital plan that is not as comprehensive and effectively with way lower premiums.

And another one that includes cover in the UK also.

And another few. 

These figures are guidelines only as all depends on the exact age & claims history. For groups of over 3 people (non-family members) there are significant discounts - again depending on the group size.

I think that's about it. You know where to find me if needed.

To be honest georgeingozo it shouldn't be as the requirement states Comprehensive and this plan has certain limits, exclusions & etc. My colleague advised me that none of the members came back to say it wasn't accepted as of yet, but she is really hesitant in offering the plan same way in offering deductibles for people that need it for residency requirements. The problem is, it's not stated what must be covered under the plan for the residency..

My recommendations would be go with the best plan, but again, some people take out the lower one, it's accepted, their friends want the same 'cheaper' plan and so on - I would say it is only a matter of time until they (government) cop on and start actually checking the cover or might include the specific requirement for it.

Sorry it's not exactly the answer 'yes' or 'no'.

do you take new members who are already over 60 when applying and if so , are the rates quoted the ones that would apply.?

I'm asking this because I was told by another insurance that they do not take new customers over 60. These would be offered coverage through a UK insurance at a higher rate.

Otherwise the rates quoted seem interesting.

Hi Ricky,

New members can join up to the age of 64 (doesn't apply to members renewing their insurance). New clients who are 60 years of age and over would be asked to attend for a medical check-up with a Bupa medical advisor. The rates I've mentioned above would apply (unless there is an excessive claims history), but depending on the medical check-up results some exclusions or restrictions may apply.

Just to mention, new clients 55 to 59 years of age would require a medical report from the Family doctor prior to joining (there is a list of items that this report should include).

Is it possible to get the link as well?  I am moving from Canada and have started to complete application for Residency under the new Global Residency Programme,  I am also in the process of insurance as I have had some conflicting reports of needing both Malta health insurance as well as insurance for the entire EU.  I have been doing all of this through a lawyer in Malta however this new Residency Programme is even quite new for them.  I would greatly appreciate any link you may have so I can do some cross referncing.  If anyone has any questions regarding anything feel free to ask as I have been dealing with things through a lawyer for a couple weeks now.  My knowledge would only be for Non-EU seeking residency under the new Residency Programme and self sufficient..

Just a quick note, as I was speaking to my lawyer today he noted that my insurance should cover both the EU and Malta for the new Residency Programme, if anyone has heard otherwise could you please let me know.  Thanks
