Mamallapuram / Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu

I am of indian origin but spent most of my life abroad. I am planning to vist india and much heard of the place called mahabalipuram. Would you give me some insight on this place? where could i possibly find nice crowd and nice time to vacation? if you could reply...here is my email.
