Moving to Qatar

I have been offered a position in Doha what essential information do I require. The company I will be working for are taking care of work visa, accommodation etc

You need a contract in writing that details EVERYTHING!

i.e. What type of accommodation? Where?
Transport provided?
What level of health cover? Are they giving you health cover?
Will RP be processed before or after probation? How long is probation?
What is monthly salary - other allowances?
Other benefits - what are they - when paid - conditions etc
Education allowance (if you have kids) is it enough?

Exactly ! All those ...be aware if didnt like your job . They rarely give noc...so during the pro period you have to decide if you will stay or leave

Written contract being drawn up now and should be with me within the next 7 days
1. Staff accomodation or 9000 QR PM not sure of location
2. Tot is on a monthly payment so I would have to buy something when arrived
3. Health cover not too sure at the moment
4. RP is in place before I arrive, probationary period 6 months
5. Monthly salary 23000 QR, travel allowance, utilities and accomodation monthly
6. Excellent flight allowance
7. Coming alone, no kids

Many thanks for the info

Alex

Hi Darine Y
I am just waiting for the written contract, once I hav e that I will be taken through it by my advisor who put me in touch with the company I will be working for

Thank you for your feedback

Alex

Wish you the best Alex.

Cheers
Darine

Many Thanks

RP can't be issued before arrival - you will arrive on a business visa - I would double check when they intend to apply for RP as you can't purchase a car, get an alcohol permit and will have trouble renting (if you decide to take the allowance option) without an RP.

You might also consider asking how long it usually takes them to get the RP - I know people that have had to wait 3-6 months for it to go through government approval processes - or it could be like us - husband had his 2 1/2 weeks after arriving.

You might also check the conditions of the flight allowance - in Saudi we were allowed to transfer the annual flight to a cheaper fare to an alternate location (i.e. go to UK rather than home to Aussie)- in Qatar we are only allowed to use the annual flight to 'go home' - they won't transfer it to another cheaper location.

Think of any way they could get away with paying you less or not at all and make sure you get an answer in writing - they are notoriously slippery characters out here!

Hi,

I am a metallurgical engineer and I am in the middle of a job interview process for a position in Qatar.
Can you tell me ,please, what is the wage for an engineering position in Qatar ?Sunday they are going to call me and I need to know this. Is there anything important I need to clarify during this interview ?  [email protected]
   I appreciate your help.
Thank you.
  Florin

Hi,
Can you clarify the annual  back home trip, please?
I am not allowed to get back home as many time I can afford ?
  Thank you.
Florin

Florin - you need to negotiate a wage that is going to make it worthwhile, most advice would be at least 1.5 times what you are currently earning as a ball park figure. But it will depend upon your circumstances, basically you want a wage that will allow you to meet expenses and save a reasonable amount.

Annual flights are paid for by the company and you are entitled to only one in each year. You can obviously travel home at any other time you like, as many times as you want as long as YOU pay for it and have the annual leave to go!! However, the company will probably not allow you to leave the country at all during your period of probation, which may be as long as 6 months.

My wife has been offered a job in Doha. Her dad is already living in Doha. We thinking of moving to Doha with our 15 month old son. I am taking a chance and coming over without a job, my wife only employed. Advantage we have, we will be living with her dad.

Is this a good move or not? Should i find a job and then move? My wife will be employed thou.

Await feedback.

Hi Jeff - the problem for you will be related to visas.

You need a sponsor to get a visa - your wife will have one from her employer. There are no issues with husbands sponsoring wives, but it can be very difficult for a wife to sponsor a husband - and they have just tightened the rules again. Plus, even if she does sponsor you then I don't think that you are allowed to work. I would check with her employer whether she will be eligible to sponsor you.

So, it would be to your benefit to find a position, with an employer that will sponsor you. What sort of work do you do? There are plenty of jobs around in Doha - Oil n Gas, Construction and also for Qatar Airways if you are not a 'specialist'.

Hi dragonladoz,

Thank you for taking the time and responding.

How long have you been in Qatar?

I'm currently in the medical industry, sales rep.
I worked for a construction company 4 years, doing finance.
I'll have to try my luck in getting a visa.

What about the cost of living in Doha, what is a good package.
If my wife will be working until i  find something, what's a reasonable offer to live there.

@ Jeff

We've been here since Feb, but in Saudi before that - cost of living is difficult depending on where you come from and what you like - best to use one of the online calculators to get an idea.

http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/co … ntry=Qatar

this one isn't bad although the prices listed for some of the grocery items are a bit high, depending on where you shop - I find the local places cheaper and with better quality fresh food than Carrefour etc. As a family of 4 with 2 ravenous boys we spend about QR5000 a month, which would include alcohol and eating out fairly regularly.

Biggest costs here are rent, schooling and the holidays that you will plan and take!!!

Try sending your CV as a general skills type of one to a few recruitment companies here - I can recommend LA Recruitment as I know the girls there - they are great. http://91.109.4.195/global-locations

Also try QR or QAS - http://careers.qatarairways.com/qatarai … earch.aspx

Good luck

Health cover should be covered too - law is changing but standard contract should include your Health cover.

oops just saw the date ... so Alex did it all go well?
