Pets

I am moving across to Hurghada from England in the UK in the summer.. I am planning to take my pet toy poodle with me.. I have started the passport process but now need to find out which airline carries pets .. does anyone know of one or used one and can instruct me on where to start please.

Kind regards,
Sandra

You can check their websites or call them?

it is a long time since i brought my dog out here and i know that they no longer run - i was going back to the uk via germany and condor so i presume they will be your best bet into hurghada x

it has been a long time since i brought my dog from the uk - i was going back via germany with condor - you could try that as they fly into hurghada x

Which Airline was that.. because i have made contact with Thomas Cook, Thomson and Easyjet and none them fly pets.

Regards
Sandra

Most airlines carry pets, Egypair, Swiss airlines, Turkish airlines all have pet carrying services and probably most other airlines too. If you log onto any of the individual airlines websites and put pets in the search box it will show you their pet carrying policy and it would probably be better to deal direct with the airline rather than a travel agent as the airlines will have strict rules regarding paperwork, pet carriers, cabin or cargo etc.

hi , we are hoping to fetch our labrador across next year . it looks like your best bet is to get in touch with the pet carriers and they can advise you what to do ,

Thank you for your reply.. But having spent months researching and speaking to others for advice, i have made the painful decision to leave him behind with a relative that sees him every day and who has always looked after him when i have holidayed in Egypt.

My reasons.  Speaking with someone at Defra.. who advised me on the process up to the point of actually taking him to Hurghada.
The microchipping, shots, blood test etc... for the passport.  ( Not a problem )

The Airlines that come from the West Midlands to Hurghada that i use to fly.. Don't fly pets.
( Ok not a problem.. i travel to London to use another airline that do carry pets )

Then i researched the airlines that do carry pets and i was astonished to be told the requirements.  Crate that conforms to legal requirements ie, size etc.. nothing must go inside the crate for health and safety reasons, ie, blanket, toys, etc.
( No problem ) i understand that.

But then i was told sometimes the pet has to be in the airport 24 hours before the flight.. we cant put food inside the crate, then the flight 6 + hours plus how long are they held in the aiport once in Egypt? still no food, they say the staff would provide water !!!!!! I don't trust that.

Then i was told upto 40% of animals don't make it !!!!!!

Then i was advised .. because he is a toy poodle with fur. He wouldn't cope with the climate change.

When i actually stopped and considered everything.. I think the trauma would be too much for him.. he is a very timid, and sensitive needy little dog.

I know he is going to be loved, spoiled and cared for just the same as i have loved and cared for him.

Kind regards,
Sandra

To be honest Sandra - I think you have made a difficult decision - that is the correct one!

Your dof hasn't grown up with the type of climate we have here - so who knows how he would handle it.
Also Vets here are not the same calibre as they are in the UK neither are the kennels (if any are available_ to look after your dog when you are on holiday!

You may think your daughter may take him into her home - but her Husband is EGyptian and they have very different views on having dogs as pets than most of us.

Like I say - heart wrenching - but you have done what is best for your dog in my opinion!!

Hi Biffy.  Thank you for your compassion.  I know i have made the correct decision!  I do know what you mean about the egyptians and animals, kennels, vets etc.  I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions before reaching my decision.

It really is heart breaking.. i have had him for a long long time and it has been just him and me for the last year and a half since Lucy left to live in Hurghada.. To be honest it was having him that made it easier for me when Lucy left ( Missed her sooooo much ) but it is a family member that he sees daily and who has him while i am away that will take him and love and look after him.

Hi All,

For anyone wanting to know about flying pets to Egypt - I brought my English Staffy from AUSTRALIA to Egypt in Oct 2013.
British Airways will take animals on their flights from Heathrow to Cairo.  I know this because my dog had to fly via London because the Arab carriers (Emirates, Etihad, Qatar) wouldn't take him because Staffy's are apparently "dangerous breeds" !
I used a specialist pet transport company in Australia called JetPets.  It was an expensive and complicated journey, but 100% worth it.  We used a wonderful ground clearance agent in Cairo to ensure that we got my dog out of customs ASAP.  It took us about 4 hours, but trust me - do not leave your pets at any Egyptian airport by themselves.  People here do not care about animals in the same way that people from other countries do.

There is no work in Egypt so we are hoping to move to England in the next few months.  I have been in contact with Pet Passengers www.petpassengers.co.uk and they quoted me 1300GBP to transport my Staffy from Cairo to Heathrow and I imagine it would be a similar price back the other way (Heathrow to Cairo)  They have experience moving animals from Egypt to England, so I will use them to move my dog when the time comes.

I believe you can try and arrange to move your pet yourself, but after what I saw in Cairo Cargo when I picked up my dog, there is no way on earth that I would risk doing the move myself to save some $.

Hope this info helps.
