I've read posts suggesting that when going shopping it's good to carry a backpack to put purchases in. But then I've seen other posts suggesting that wearing a backpack is like a neon sign saying Gringo. How to the locals take home their purchases on market day?

Locals walk if they're close to home, or they use the bus, taxis if they don't have a car.
I saw many expats bringing supplies in their backpacks and is fine. Some how you can realize backpacks are full of food no cellphones so is OK.
