The iPhone 5 has a smaller than normal sim card. Are these available in Ecuador? I need to know if I should stick with a 4S which uses the standard size sim card.
Also what about data programs? Do most just buy minutes and use WiFi hotspots or are there reliable and affordable data packages available for smart phones.
Are iPhone 5 sim cards available?

I've got a SIM-cutter for making any SIM working with iPhone5 (and another for iPhone4) and i could help you for coffee 
As for data plans - for pay as you go i use movistar 500 mb fo 22$/month
Also you could use Claro for about the same...
For my opinion Movi's internet a little bit better then Claro's one.
Also with Movistar tethering is available, but don't work with Claro.

Yes they have iPhone 5 sim cards here in Ecuador- or you can cut the bigger one.
