Recomended Clinics in the US

Hello!

I have been dealing with stomach issues for several years, this have gotten worst in the past 2 years, and ever since January I haven't been able to get better. I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis and malabsorption syndrome. After trying both traditional and non traditional medicine in DR I have gotten to the conclusion that the doctors here don't know how to treat my syndrome. Gastritis is very common but for what I have read over the internet malabsorption syndrome is treated depending on the specifics on each patient.

As I have been looking for info I have seen that most of the modern information is in English, and since im tired of going to the doctors in my country I have decided to go in summer to the US.

I've been looking for clinics and doctors that specialize in digestive disorders, but I was wondering if any of you have had some experience or know of someone who's had a digestive disorder, id prefer that since im investing in treating myself in the US I treat myself with someone that has a good reference. Im in the process of getting an international heath insurance to lower the cost of medical expenses over there, and since I have an American tourist visa I can come and go with no problems.

Any suggestions?

I hate to say it, but unless money is not an issue whatsoever, I wouldn't recommend it. I think it would be better for you to seek recommendations for a good doctor/clinic in Central or South America.

I work in the medical field, but not in GI. I can give you an idea of what you'd be looking at.  The visit to a specialist - no testing, labs, etc. - as a "new patient" is going to easily cost $250-400 USD.  That's simply to talk to him/her so that they can formulate a diagnostic/treatment plan.  Because you've already undergone a number of work-ups, the physician is likely to order a variety of labs and diagnostic tests right from the start.  Without exaggeration, your bill for a single visit, including labs and procedures, could easily cost thousands of $$.  And that's just the initial work-up.

To explain how and why things cost so much here is a whole other discussion. There are a number of known reasons, and others that are up for debate.

Also, most physicians will accept only the most common insurance plans that are used by their typical patient base.  So just know that you may have difficulty finding a physician who will take the international insurance that you're considering.

And speaking of insurance...any plan that doesn't have serious restrictions (such as very high deductible or co-pay) will typically cost at least several hundred dollars per month.    And even then, they will limit coverage on "pre-existing" conditions, which would apply to any GI issues you're seeking to use the insurance for in the first place.

Sorry to be so negative, but it's the truth.  Maybe others will have a different recommendation or advice.  But again, although I've never received comprehensive medical care outside of the US,  I've heard very good things about doctors in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Ecuador, just to name a few. I think it would be worth considering a work-up by a physician in a well-respected, though much less expensive, alternative country other than the United States.

Thanks for the suggestions Tim.

Im still not giving up in the US aspect. As far as the international insurance it is expensive (around 1,400 US a year) but even though the doctors doesn't necessarily take it, when you come back to DR they give you back from 70 to 80% of the expenses. However you are right I have to consider the deductible, and all the other specifics.

I want to go the US beacause I haven't found any Latin countries that specialize in MA syndrome, and after spending lots of money, time and honestly not finding a cure or a treatment that works its overwhelming and exhausting.

So I really don't care about the money if it will guarantee me my health. Its a trip that I will make in three to four months so I have time to get the information I need, and I will take in consideration finding a Latin country that could treat the malasorption syndrome.

Thanks so much! :)

Have you thought at all that the problem may be related to gluten in your diet. Either Ciliac ds or intolerance. Try going to a totally gluten free (wheat free)diet for a few weeks and see if this does not improve the problem.
There is a great book out there called "Wheat belly"  a terrific read.

Thanks Bob,

Ive tried that but it didn't seem to work, plus I had a special tolerance test done and gluten was on the thing I could have. True I tried it about a 2 years ago... I have a doctors appointment today so ill talk to him about it maybe trying it again for a few weeks.

I`ll definitely check the book out! Im sure I can get it on amazon!

Have a nice day and thanks again on your advice!
