Expat spouse job hunting...

Hi Folks
I am working as an expat in KL but my wife is looking for some job in biotech field (entry level)
She is ready to work as local.
Any suggestions / possibility?
Thanks.

Hi problem is although technically she can apply for permission to work easily no employer will believe her! unfortunately a Malaysian usual thing - why they just can't issue a spouse pass that says "allowed to work" is beyond any sane reasoning.

Hi,

I am also relocating to KL by the end of April 2013.

Can some one guide me as to how I search for a job for my wife? She is a graduate in commerce and has relevant experience of working in MNCs in India.

Thanks in advance.

Nemodot,
Thanks a lot for piece of advice.

We are facing real trouble in getting her job as we always heard "Locals Preferred".

Appreciate ur comments.

Cheers.

Hi Guys,

My fiance is already working with a Multi National Bank in KL, Malaysia. He is an Indian, and is living there for the past 3 months. We plan to get married in the month of Nov 2013. Post that I will be moving in with him. I will start to job hunt from the month of April. How easy it to get a job in Malaysia and even if i dont get it now, are there any restrictions on the working of spouse of a non Malaysian resident?

Kindly help.

Mayura,
Yes..it is difficult for non Malaysian to get the job unless you have some specialist degree...(election is also coming in this year so can be very difficult if not impossible)

Best wishes for marriage.

Tejas

Hi Tejas,

Thank  so much for your lovely wishes.

I am an Engg in IT and MBA in Marketing from NMIMS University, Mumbai (Among the top 10 universities in India). Also, I have 4 years of working experience. Will this help? So should i start applying now itself so that this try will give me some exposure by November.

Hi Mayura,
As you are graduate in IT and MBA marketing from NMIMS and 4 years of exp, things should be bit easy for you.

You can start applying now but i am not sure if you get any response now but no harm in trying...

As you mentioned your fiance is in KL, he can also start looking for job for you and/or give you an guidance on job hunting.

Gud luck!

Tejas

Hi Tejas,

Yes, I have started applying for jobs. I know the response will be low and delayed but its ok. I am giving that try.

Secondly, i would like to know, in case if i don't get a job and come on a dependent pass on my husband's VISA, is there any restriction of working on a dependent pass, like the 2 year no work in USA and UK? Does Malaysia put any such restrictions???

Regards,
Mayura

Hi Mayura,
Try to get something before you land in KL.
Job hunting is difficult on dependent pass as it is tagged to your husband's work permit expiry data (which i guess is for 2 years. Need to renew every 2 years).

But things should not be as difficult even if you land in Kl empty handed due to ur education and work exp.

If you are ok and confortable and need more info than buzz me on mail id

Thanks.

Thanks a ton once again.

Most expat wives traditionally just shopped and got drunk with other expat wives.

Same is still true.

The best hole is company of husband/wife finds job for partner. But that is rate too as I knew wives with big companies who still didn't get jobs.

And I knew a few guys who entertained some wives (!) and an expat stint can be a marriage breaker as wife gets bored or husband ends up with an SPG! Honestly a big risk as expat jobs are stressful.

Advice is get job before arrive, ask company to find job or try freelance work like tuition. Trouble is dependent visa stamped cannot work so at any interview who wants to take the risk?

I'm not quite as pessimistic as our friend above.

You can job search on the dependent visa, but once you find employment, then get your own employment visa.

If your husband is raking in the cash, then you might wind up like the women that Nemodot describes. In my experience that is split about 50/50.  Wives with families are taking care of their families, wives without families find that life can be a bit boring...but that is true whether you are here, there or anywhere.

So, by all means, search, network, find something to interest you and employ you.

Good luck.

Thanks guys.... Each of your views are critical and are making my decision stronger of finding a job before I come to Malaysia.

Thanks,

Mayura C

Hi Mayura105,

I strongly advise you to secure employment prior to arriving in KL as a dependent spouse. I have been trying to secure an employment pass for the past 8 months or so...The companies that were willing to apply for my pass had been rejected twice...it's quite frustrating, more so as I have over 4 yrs experience working for a large Telco back home and as I'm equipped with a Masters degree...more over, the authorities fail to provide adequate reasoning for rejection of application, which can take quite a toll on your patience...

So, I suggest you avoid the mistake I made and earnestly hunt for a job in Malaysia before you arrive...

Good Luck !

Thanks a ton KTtrots. I have already applied on some of the job portals and started searching for the jobs. Hope i succeed.

Mayura

Hi Tejas

Any luck with your spouse job? I may face the same concern...am planning to move from SG...the potl offer I have is quite good....a step up..frm what I have here...

Are most jobs designated for locals? If the co. is willing to a hire an intl..are there issues wid the visa?

Thanks
